The countdown is half the fun of December. A quilted Advent calendar wall hanging turns that countdown into something you made by hand — 24 little pockets to fill with notes, treats, and tiny surprises, brought out year after year. Make it in October and November, while you can sew at a relaxed pace, and it will be ready to hang on December 1st. This is a confident-beginner project: lots of straight seams, simple quilting, and no zippers or buttonholes.
What You’ll Make
One quilted wall hanging, about 20″ wide by 28″ long, with four rows of six pockets — 24 pockets in all, numbered 1 to 24. A light layer of batting gives it soft body so it hangs flat, and two fabric loops at the top slip over a dowel for hanging. Finished pocket size is about 2½″ square, just right for a wrapped candy, a folded activity note, a small ornament, or a gift card tucked in the last pocket.

- A wooden dowel, about 24″ long, plus ribbon or twine for hanging — available at most craft stores or your local quilt shop. Small treats, notes, or ornaments to fill the pockets come from your stash and your kitchen, too.
Steps
- Cut the panel. Cut one rectangle 20½″ by 28½″ from your background fabric for the front, one the same size for the backing, and one from batting. Set the backing and batting aside.
- Cut and prep the pockets. Cut 24 squares, 3½″ by 3½″, mixing prints from the bundle. Fuse a 3½″ square of interfacing to the wrong side of each, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Fold the top edge of each square down ½″ twice, press, and topstitch close to the fold — this is the finished pocket opening.
- Add the numbers. Write numbers 1–24 lightly on the pockets with a removable fabric marker you already own, then hand-stitch, appliqué, or leave them unnumbered and fill in order if you prefer a cleaner look. If you add numbers, do it now, while each pocket is still flat and easy to handle.
- Arrange the rows. Lay the front panel flat. Arrange the pockets in four rows of six, spacing them evenly with about ½″ between pockets and a wider border at the bottom for the title if you want one. Pin each pocket along its sides and bottom only.
- Sew the pockets down. Stitch down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side of each pocket, close to the edge. Leave the top open. Backstitch at both top corners — those corners take the most tugging in December.
- Quilt and layer. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and the pocket panel (right side up). Pin well. Quilt with simple straight lines in the borders and between the rows, avoiding the pockets themselves. Trim edges even.
- Make hanging loops and bind. Cut two strips 2″ by 6″ from a bundle print, fold each into a loop, and pin them to the top back edge, evenly spaced. Bind all four edges with your favorite binding method, catching the loops in the top binding so they are secure.
- Hang and fill. Slip the dowel through the loops, tie on ribbon or twine, and hang it up. Fill each pocket before December 1st, or fill a week at a time to keep the surprises fresh.
Tips
- Mix busy and quiet prints in the pockets and alternate them across each row — the calendar reads as cheerful, not chaotic.
- Not every pocket needs candy. Fold in simple activity notes: bake cookies, read a holiday story, call a grandparent, drive to see the lights. Kids remember those longest.
- Making this as a gift? Fill just the first few pockets and include a note inviting the family to fill the rest together.
- Press pocket squares before you arrange them. A crisp grid is mostly pressing, not perfect measuring.
