Hey everyone. Today you will learn how to sew a fresh kitchen apron you will actually reach for.
Here we go.
First, let's talk about the fabric. This one is Dear Stella Crimp Jade.
It is a quilting cotton from Dear Stella. The fiber is 100% cotton, sold by the yard.
The width of fabric is 44"/45". The collection is Crimp, and the color is Jade.
Jade here is a clear, lovely green. Fresh, but not loud. Calm, but not pale.
What makes Crimp special is the texture. It has a fine crinkle texture, so it reads as a near-solid.
The product notes call it a versatile blender. It works for backgrounds, borders, and binding.
Today, it gets to be the star. I want that jade green right up front.
The project: a kitchen apron
An apron is a simple cover for your front. It ties at the waist and loops over your neck.
It keeps flour and splashes off your clothes. It also gives you a big pocket for a spoon or a towel.
Our apron finishes about 28 inches wide by 32 inches long. That is a good, generous fit for most adults.
This fabric suits the project really well. An apron front is one big, flat panel. That near-solid jade shows off beautifully.
The crinkle texture adds interest without a busy print. It also hides little wrinkles, which is a real gift in the kitchen.
Quilting cotton presses well and sews clean. It is light to tie, and sturdy enough for daily use.
Make the whole apron in Jade for a clean, matched look. That is my preference. Or add a print pocket for a little pop. Completely up to you.
Materials
- 1 1/2 yards of Dear Stella Crimp Jade Cotton 44"/45" Fabric Per Yard for the apron body, pocket, and ties
- 50-weight cotton thread in a matching green, for construction and topstitching
- Size 80/12 needle for this quilting cotton
- Rotary cutter, mat, ruler, pins or clips, iron, and your sewing machine
Brief steps
First, press your fabric lightly. Do not press all the life out of that crinkle. A gentle press to remove fold lines is plenty.
Cut your apron body at 30 inches wide by 34 inches long. That includes a 1/2-inch hem allowance on the sides and bottom.
Fold the body in half lengthwise, right sides together. Mark the top edge in to 9 inches from the fold.
Mark down the side 10 inches. Draw a gentle curve between those points. That is your arm curve.
Cut along that curve through both layers. Open it back out, and you have your apron shape. Just like that.
Cut your pocket at 10 inches wide by 9 inches tall. Hem the top edge, then press the other three edges under 1/2 inch.
Center the pocket about 8 inches below the top edge. Pin it, then stitch the sides and bottom.
Add a divider line if you want two smaller pockets. I like one big pocket myself.
Now hem the apron. Fold curves, sides, and bottom under 1/4 inch twice. Press and stitch close to the fold.
Use a stitch length of about 2.5 to 3.0 mm, roughly 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Go slow and steady on those curves.
For ties, cut two waist strips at 3 inches by 28 inches, and one neck strip at 3 inches by 26 inches.
Fold each strip in half lengthwise, right sides together. Sew the long edge with a 1/4-inch seam, turn it right side out, and press.
Attach waist ties at the arm curve corners. Attach the neck strip at the top, and try it on before stitching the second end.
Practical tips
Slow down on the arm curves. A tight curve can pucker if you rush it. Ease it around a little at a time.
Slow down again where the ties meet the hem. That spot is thick, so take it easy or the needle can snap.
If a hem wobbles a little, leave it. This is an apron, not a judged show quilt. It does not have to be perfect.
You are your own worst critic here. Nobody is measuring your topstitching. They are asking what is for dinner.
Take your time, it's not a race. If I can do this, y'all can do it. We're not reinventing the wheel here.
For washing, this cotton apron goes right in the wash with your kitchen linens. That crinkle looks good even when you skip the ironing.
Alrighty. Tie yours on and get cooking. Super duper useful, and really really pretty in that jade.
Thanks for sewing along with me, folks. We'll see you next time. Bye.
