Hey everyone! Today we're making a quick microwave bowl cozy set using Console Yourself cotton. You’ll learn fabric basics, a simple materials list, and steps to stitch it up safely.
Console Yourself is a Dear Stella 100% cotton quilting fabric. It’s 44/45 inches wide. The print mixes blue, pink, and multi colors with castle and princess motifs. That makes it bright and kid-friendly. Cotton presses clean and stitches even, so it’s a great pick for a bowl cozy you’ll actually use.
Why this fabric works
Cotton holds a crease. It gives your cozy that firm hug around a bowl. The mid-weight feel is stable, and it’s easy to find matching thread. If I can do this, y'all can do it.
Project: Bowl Cozy Set
This is a two-piece, bowl-hugging cozy that slips in the microwave. We’ll make two sizes to cover most bowls.
Materials
- Console Yourself cotton: 1/3 yard total (you can cut both pieces from this)
- 100% cotton batting, 1/3 yard
- 100% cotton thread, weight 50
- Sewing machine, walking foot option
- Needle size 80/12 or 90/14 universal
- Tension around 3.5–4, stitch length 2.5–3.0
- Rotary cutter, ruler, iron
Brief steps
- Cut two 10 inch squares for medium bowls, and two 8 inch squares for small bowls.
- Cut batting the same sizes.
- Layer cotton right sides together with batting on top.
- Stitch around 3 sides at 1/4 inch seam. Leave a 2 inch gap to turn.
- Clip corners. Turn right side out. Press flat.
- Topstitch around the edge 1/8 inch. Stitch the gap closed as you go.
- Fold the square in half, press a dart on each side, 1/2 inch deep. Stitch across the dart. Tie off.
Warning at the moment of risk: Only use 100% cotton thread, batting, and fabric. Poly blends can melt in the microwave. No metallics. If you’re unsure about your batting, check the label. Safety first, always.
Tips
I made a first version with a too-small gap and it was tight to turn. Fix: leave a full 2 inches. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You’re your own worst critic. If a seam wobbles, press and keep going. Take your time, it’s not a race.
Want a softer look? Use a lighter cotton batting and a longer stitch, 3.0–3.2. Want more structure? Snug the darts to 3/4 inch. Both ways work. Completely up to you.
That’s it. You’ll have a cute, washable cozy that keeps your hands happy. Console Yourself makes the project pop without being fussy.
