Hey everyone! Today we're making a handy bowl cozy set, and you'll learn a simple, safe way to sew one.

Meet the fabric first

This is the Boundless Coordinated Stash Builder Bundle - Jumping Jacks.

It is a Craftsy Bluprint bundle.

The total is 14 yards.

You get 8 pieces in all.

These are quilt-shop quality fabrics, made in Japan.

Every piece is 100% cotton.

The width is 44/45 inches.

The listed end uses are crafts and quilting.

Here is exactly what you get.

You get 5/8 yard of dark blue on blue tonal floral.

You get 5/8 yard of yellow tonal floral.

You get 3/8 yard of moss purple tonal floral.

You get 3/4 yard of royal blue tonal floral.

You get 7/8 yard of teal tonal floral.

You get 1 yard of chambray tonal floral.

You get 1 3/4 yards of white aqua floral.

And you get 8 yards of ivory solid.

The pattern is not included.

That is fine, y'all. We're not reinventing the wheel here.

I like this bundle for kitchen makes. The tonal florals are pretty, not fussy. The colors play well together. The ivory gives you a calm lining.

The project: a bowl cozy set

We are making four bowl cozies to start.

Each one finishes about 10 inches square.

That size cradles a standard soup bowl nicely.

You slip the bowl into the cozy first. Then set the whole thing in the microwave. When the soup is hot, lift it out by the cozy corners. Your hands stay comfortable.

Why does this bundle suit it?

A cozy needs just two 10-inch squares, plus batting. These smaller cuts are just right. Quilting cotton presses flat, quilts clean, and holds its shape.

My pick is teal tonal floral outside. Ivory solid inside, every time.

Or mix it up, folks. One royal blue, one yellow, one chambray.

Completely up to you.

Materials list

  • The Boundless Coordinated Stash Builder Bundle - Jumping Jacks - various fabrics 14 yards total, for the outside and lining below
  • For four cozies: eight 10-inch squares of floral for the outsides
  • For the linings: eight 10-inch squares of ivory solid
  • 100% cotton batting: eight squares, each 9 1/2 inches square
  • 100% cotton thread, 50-weight, in ivory or soft white
  • A size 80/12 universal needle, or a 90/14 if your layers feel thick
  • Your usual tools: rotary cutter, ruler, mat, marking pencil, clips, iron, and sewing machine
  • A soup bowl from your kitchen, to check the fit as you go

One safety note, and it matters. For a microwave cozy, everything must be cotton. Cotton fabric, batting, and thread. No polyester batting. No synthetic thread. This bundle is 100% cotton, so we start right.

Brief steps

Step one: press well. Cut your 10-inch outer and lining squares. Cut batting a half inch smaller, at 9 1/2 inches.

Step two: center one batting square on the wrong side of one outer square. Do the same for a lining square.

Step three: quilt a simple X across each layered square. Corner to corner, both ways. Use about 8 stitches per inch.

Step four: fold one quilted square in half. Mark a dart 2 inches in from each folded corner, 1 inch deep. Sew it. Trim the excess, leaving 1/4 inch.

Step five: fold that square the other way. Sew the other two darts. Now it cups, just like that. Repeat for the lining.

Step six: nest the lining cup inside the outer cup, wrong sides together. Clip well.

Step seven: sew around the top with a 1/4-inch seam. Turn the raw edge under. Topstitch 1/8 inch from the edge.

Step eight: set your bowl inside and check the fit. Repeat three more times.

Practical tips

Tip one: go slow over those dart layers. They get thick at the corners. Slow down or the needle snaps, and nobody needs that.

Tip two: I have sewn a dart backwards. Oh my goodness, yes I have. I took it out slow and sewed it again. No harm done, folks.

Tip three: do not chase perfect points. It does not have to be perfect. You are your own worst critic here. Take your time, it is not a race. If I can do this, y'all can do it.

And remember this. Use cozies to carry a hot bowl, not as an oven pot holder. They are for the microwave and the table.

This bundle holds enough for lots of cozies. Super duper easy gifts, y'all.

Alrighty, folks. Thanks so much for sewing along with me today.

We'll see you next time. Bye.
