Hey everyone. Today you'll learn how to turn one soft vintage print into a gentle wall hanging for your home.
Here we go.
Meet the fabric
This is 3 Sisters Favorites Vintage.
It is the design in Cream.
The number on it is 44360 11.
It comes from Moda Fabrics.
It was designed by 3 Sisters.
The collection is 3 Sisters Favorites Vintage.
And the color is soft cream.
Just a warm, quiet cream.
Really really pretty, y'all.
It is 100% cotton quilting fabric.
It has a vintage-style print.
Soft, romantic, and elegant too.
The listing calls it lovely for backgrounds.
Low-volume backgrounds, in particular.
This yardage is 45 inches wide.
And it is sold by the yard.
I love a cream like this.
It just softens the whole room.
Why it suits a wall hanging
A wall hanging lives up close.
You see it every single day.
You walk right past it.
So the fabric needs to feel calm.
This soft cream does that job.
The vintage style feels timeless here.
It is not too loud.
It is not too plain either.
It gives you something to look at.
Without fighting your other quilts.
I would hang this in a hallway.
Or above a small sewing table.
Completely up to you, as always.
We're not reinventing the wheel here.
One panel and some simple quilting.
Super duper easy, super duper sweet.
What you will need
- This 3 Sisters Favorites Vintage Cream fabric — 1 yard for the front panel and sleeve, finished hanging about 24 inches wide by 32 inches long
- Backing fabric — 3/4 yard of a coordinating cotton, cut 26 by 34 inches
- Low-loft cotton batting — one piece cut 26 by 34 inches
- Binding fabric — 1/4 yard, cut into 2 1/2-inch strips
- 50-weight cotton thread in a soft cream for piecing and quilting
- Universal or quilting needle, size 80/12
- Rotary cutter, mat, and a long ruler
- Pins or clips, plus basting pins or spray
- A wooden dowel or flat stick, about 26 inches long, for hanging
Let me walk through those numbers.
One yard is 36 inches long.
That is at the full 45-inch width.
Cut your front panel 24 1/2 by 32 1/2 inches.
That includes a 1/4-inch seam all around.
Cut your hanging sleeve 4 by 24 inches.
You will have a little fabric left.
Save it for a small label.
Brief steps
- Press your fabric gently, then cut the front panel, sleeve, backing, and batting using the sizes above.
- Layer the backing wrong side up, the batting on top, and the cream panel right side up, then baste the layers together.
- Quilt simply to hold the layers: stitch in the ditch around the edge, then add a gentle meander or soft echo quilting across the middle, about 8 to 10 stitches per inch.
- Travel along the edge between areas so you do not have to stop and start, and tie off your threads neatly on the back.
- Trim the quilted piece to exactly 24 by 32 inches, squaring your corners carefully with your ruler.
- Join your 2 1/2-inch binding strips, press them in half lengthwise, and sew the binding around the front with a 1/4-inch seam.
- Fold the binding to the back and hand stitch or machine stitch it down, mitering each corner as you go.
- Fold the 4-inch sleeve in half lengthwise, sew the long edge, press it flat, and hand stitch it to the back just below the top binding, then slide in your dowel.
On the quilting, please go slow.
Slow down or the needle snaps.
Especially when you cross a thick spot.
I rushed a wall hanging once.
My meander got tight and wavy.
I picked out one wavy section.
Then I slowed down and re-did it.
Just like that, it laid flat.
Practical tips
It does not have to be perfect.
You are your own worst critic.
Nobody will stand there measuring it.
Take your time, it's not a race.
If I can do this, y'all can do it.
Want quilting with more texture?
Try a simple feather in the center.
Want it flatter and quieter?
Stick with stitch in the ditch and echo.
Both ways are completely lovely.
Completely up to you, either way.
Check your level before you hang it.
A sleeve sewn a touch crooked shows.
Pin the sleeve, check it, then stitch.
That one check saves real frustration.
Oh my goodness, that cream glow.
It looks good in any light.
Alrighty, that's our vintage wall hanging.
Thanks so much for sewing along with me.
We'll see you next time. Bye.
