A Sweet Vintage Pillowcase in 3 Sisters Favorites Cream

Hey everyone. Today you'll learn how to make a sweet vintage pillowcase in one easy sitting.

Here we go.

Meet the fabric

This is 3 Sisters Favorites Vintage.

It is the design in Cream.

The number on it is 44362 11.

It comes from Moda Fabrics.

It was designed by 3 Sisters.

The collection is 3 Sisters Favorites Vintage.

And the color is soft cream.

Just a warm, quiet cream.

Really really pretty, y'all.

It is 100% cotton quilting fabric.

It has a vintage-style print.

Soft, romantic, and elegant too.

The listing calls it lovely for vintage-style quilts.

It also works for low-volume backgrounds.

And for elegant coordinates, too.

This yardage is 45 inches wide.

And it is sold by the yard.

I love a cream like this for bedding.

It feels calm the minute you see it.

Why it suits a pillowcase

A pillowcase is a perfect first project.

You use it every single night.

You see it every single morning.

So it should feel a little special.

This soft cream does that job.

The vintage style feels timeless here.

It suits a romantic bedroom, too.

Completely up to you, as always.

We're not reinventing the wheel here.

Straight seams and one clever roll-up.

That roll-up is called the burrito method.

It hides the raw cuff seam inside.

Super duper clever, super duper easy.

If I can do this, y'all can do it.

What you will need

  • This 3 Sisters Favorites Vintage Cream fabric — 3/4 yard for the main body, cut 27 inches by the full width of fabric, about 43 inches after you trim the selvages
  • Coordinating cotton for the cuff — 1/3 yard, cut 11 inches by 43 inches
  • Coordinating cotton for the accent strip — cut 2 inches by 43 inches, pressed in half lengthwise
  • 50-weight cotton thread in a soft cream for sewing
  • Universal or quilting needle, size 80/12
  • Rotary cutter, mat, and a long ruler
  • Pins or clips, and a good iron
  • A standard pillow, about 20 by 26 inches, to fit inside

Let me walk through those numbers.

Your finished case will be about 20 by 30 inches.

That gives a standard pillow room to breathe.

Not too tight, not too sloppy.

Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance throughout.

Set your stitch length to 2.5 millimeters.

That is about 10 stitches per inch.

Brief steps

  1. Press all three pieces well, then trim them to 43 inches wide so the body, cuff, and accent line up neatly.
  2. Lay the cuff piece right side up, place the main body right side up on top of it, aligning the top raw edges, then lay the folded accent strip along that same edge.
  3. Place the cuff's bottom edge over the top, roll the main body up toward the cuff like a burrito, and wrap the cuff around the roll so all the top raw edges match.
  4. Pin through all the layers along that top edge, then sew it with a 1/2-inch seam, taking care not to catch the rolled body in the stitching.
  5. Reach inside the tube, gently pull the rolled body out, and press the cuff flat so the accent strip peeks out cleanly.
  6. Fold the case wrong sides together, pin the side and bottom, and sew both with a 1/2-inch seam for a simple finish, then turn it right side out and press.
  7. For a neater inside, use a French seam instead: sew wrong sides together first with a 1/4-inch seam, trim, turn wrong side out, press, and sew again with a 3/8-inch seam to enclose the raw edges.
  8. Slip in your pillow, smooth the cuff, and give the whole case one last gentle press.

On that burrito seam, please go slow.

Slow down or the needle snaps.

Especially where the layers get thick.

I rushed one of these once.

I caught the rolled body in the seam.

Oh my goodness, what a little tangle.

I picked out about six inches.

Then I pinned again and slowed down.

Just like that, it came out clean.

Practical tips

It does not have to be perfect.

You are your own worst critic.

Nobody will measure your cuff at bedtime.

Take your time, it's not a race.

Prewash if you like a softer feel.

Or sew it unwashed for a crisper cuff.

Both ways are completely fine.

Completely up to you, either way.

Want a matching pair for the bed?

Double the fabric and cut two of everything.

Sew the second one right after the first.

Your hands will remember the steps.

Alrighty, that's our vintage pillowcase.

Thanks so much for sewing along with me.

We'll see you next time. Bye.
