Building a True Blue Crazy 8 Cuddle Quilt: A Beginner-Friendly Kit Guide
Some quilts take months of cutting and planning. A Crazy 8 Cuddle Kit is the opposite: the cutting is done, the pieces are coordinated, and a pattern is in the box. The True Blue version uses a classic blue colorway, so you can go from opening the kit to snuggling under a finished throw far faster than with yardage.
What This Kit Is
The Crazy 8 Cuddle Kit - True Blue is a Shannon Fabrics Cuddle kit — Shannon's line of minky plush fabrics known for their soft, cuddly surface. Instead of fabric by the yard, you get a coordinated set of pre-cuts ready to sew.
Inside are 8 pre-cut 10-inch fabric strips for the quilt top, plus binding, and a pattern. Those eight strips are the heart of the Crazy 8 design: sewn together following the included pattern, they build the top without you having to select, coordinate, and cut a stack of different fabrics yourself. The finished kit makes a quilt approximately 58 inches by 68 inches — a generous throw size for a lap, the foot of a bed, or a sofa.
Because every strip arrives the same width, your main job is keeping the pile direction consistent and your seams even as the top comes together.
What It's Best For
This kit is made for a cozy throw quilt, and that size is its sweet spot. At approximately 58 by 68 inches, the finished quilt is large enough to share on the couch and easy to fold up and take along — a reading blanket, a car blanket, or an extra layer for a guest bed.
It is also an excellent first Cuddle project. If you have wanted to try sewing with minky plush but felt unsure about choosing fabrics and cutting slippery yardage, a kit removes both hurdles: the color coordination is done, the strips are cut, and the pattern keeps construction straightforward.
Finished True Blue quilts make thoughtful gifts, too — a housewarming throw or a dorm-room blanket in a calming blue palette that suits most rooms and recipients.
How to Sew with It
Start by laying out all eight strips in the order shown in the pattern, and check the direction of the pile before you sew. Run your hand over each strip: Cuddle feels smoother in one direction than the other. Keep that direction running the same way on every strip so the finished top has an even sheen and feel.
Fit a walking foot before you begin. Minky plush can creep and shift under a standard presser foot, and long strips give it plenty of room to wander. A walking foot feeds the layers evenly, keeping long seams straight and strip ends aligned.
Lengthen your stitch to about 3.0 to 3.5mm. Longer stitches sit well in plush pile, reduce puckering, and are easier to remove if a seam needs adjusting. Use clips instead of pins along the long edges: clips grip plush securely without leaving holes, hold slippery layers in alignment better than pins, and come off quickly as you sew.
Sew slowly and support the growing top so its weight does not drag it off course. Give cut pieces a shake outdoors or over a bin — freshly handled minky releases loose fluff from cut edges, and a shake keeps it out of your machine.
For pressing, be gentle. Finger-press seams where you can, and avoid a hot iron directly on the plush face, which can crush or mark the pile. If you need an iron, use a low setting with a press cloth and lift rather than slide. Add the included binding last, following the pattern, clipping it in place all the way around before you sew.
Care Instructions
Care for a finished Cuddle quilt the gentle way: machine wash cold with like colors, and tumble dry on low or no heat. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets — they coat polyester plush fibers and can dull that soft surface over time. That cold-and-low routine keeps a True Blue throw feeling plush wash after wash.
