Sewing with Extra Wide Mist Cuddle in Amethyst: Seamless Quilt Backings Made Easy

If you love Cuddle® minky but dread piecing a backing, extra wide fabric changes everything. Purple Extra Wide Mist Cuddle Amethyst from Shannon Fabrics pairs a subtle, modern digitally printed design in a rich purple tone with a width that covers most quilts in a single panel — no centre seam, and a plush finish that makes the back as inviting as the front.

What This Fabric Is

Extra Wide Mist Cuddle® is a minky plush fabric with its design digitally printed on a short 3mm pile. That printing gives it a soft, misty, tonal look rather than a bold, high-contrast print, so the Amethyst colour reads as depth and texture across a large surface. It is 100% polyester, measures 88/90 inches wide, and weighs 360 grams per linear yard.

The 3mm pile is the classic Cuddle® sweet spot: smooth and velvety to the touch, warm without being bulky, and far easier to sew and quilt than longer-pile luxe fabrics. Seams stay flatter, layers feed more evenly, and the finished quilt drapes softly. At 88/90 inches wide, one length will back most throw, twin and lap quilts seamlessly, and it gives long-arm quilters a generous, continuous surface to work with.

What It's Best For

Quilt backings are the headline use. A single panel means no seam to align, no extra bulk down the middle of the quilt, and a clean, uninterrupted Amethyst finish on the reverse. It is equally good for whole-cloth quilts and larger-than-life throw blankets, where the subtle printed texture adds interest without competing with anything else in the room.

Try it also for long-arm quilting projects that need width and a smooth hand, for oversized throws and bed toppers, and for home décor where you want colour, softness and coverage in one cut. Because the design is tonal and modern, it works in bedrooms and living spaces as easily as in a nursery — purple that feels calm rather than loud.

How to Sew with It

Start by finding the direction of the pile. Run your hand over the surface — it will feel smoothest in one direction — and mark an arrow on the back of every piece so the nap runs the same way throughout. Cut from the back with a rotary cutter or sharp scissors, then shake each piece outdoors to release the loose fluff that fresh-cut minky edges always shed.

Fit a walking foot so the plush layer feeds evenly against cotton or batting and does not creep as you sew. Lengthen your stitch to about 3.0 to 3.5mm: longer stitches sit cleanly in the 3mm pile, reduce puckering, and are easier to unpick if you need to. Use clips instead of pins along the edges — clips hold the thick, slippery layers without leaving holes or distorting the pile, and they are faster to remove as you approach the needle. If you must pin, pin generously inside the seam allowance.

When quilting it as a backing, baste thoroughly or use a light spray baste to keep the wide panel smooth, and support the weight of the quilt so it does not drag and stretch the minky. For pressing, avoid a hot iron directly on the pile, which can crush or mark it. Press seams lightly from the cotton side, or use low heat with a press cloth and let the pile recover — finger-pressing is often all a Cuddle® seam needs.

Care Instructions

Care is simple: machine wash cold with like colours, with no fabric softener, and tumble dry low with no dryer sheet. Softener and dryer sheets coat the polyester fibres and dull that signature softness over time, so skipping them keeps the 3mm pile feeling smooth wash after wash.

For a backing that feels as good as it looks — wide enough to skip the seams, and in a modern Amethyst tone that suits almost any quilt top — Extra Wide Mist Cuddle is a smart, practical choice.
