Sewing with Mermaid Fin Cloud Cuddle: A Double-Sided Minky for Easy Blankets
Some fabrics need a partner. Mermaid Fin Cloud Cuddle Multi does not. This double-sided Shannon Fabrics minky pairs a digitally printed mermaid-scale design on one side with a plain white backing on the other, so a single cut of fabric can become a finished blanket, scarf, or throw — no separate backing to buy, baste, or sew.
What This Fabric Is
Cloud Cuddle is a Cuddle minky plush fabric, and this version is double-sided. The printed face has a 3mm pile, while the plain white reverse has a slightly longer 4mm pile. That means the two sides feel a little different: the printed side is smooth enough to show the artwork clearly, and the white side is a touch plusher against the skin.
The print itself is an eye-catching mermaid fin design that looks like iridescent blue, pink, and purple fish scales — shimmery in effect, without any actual glitter to shed. The fabric is 100% polyester, measures 58/60 inches wide, and weighs 290 grams per linear yard, so it has a cozy, substantial feel without being heavy or bulky to sew.
What It's Best For
Blankets and throws are the natural first project, and the description calls this fabric perfect for beginner sewists precisely because it does not require a backing for the finished product. Hem or bind the edges of a single panel and you have a two-sided blanket: mermaid scales on one side, clean white plush on the other.
It also works well for bedding accents, scarves, and other simple wraps where both sides will show. The underwater theme shines in costumes and in underwater-themed decor for kids' rooms — think a reading-nook throw, a bed topper, or a draped backdrop for a mermaid party. Because both sides are finished plush, projects are reversible and you can choose which side faces out.
How to Sew with It
Start by deciding which side is your right side for each piece, and mark the white backing with a removable marker or a small clip so the printed scales stay oriented the way you want them. Run your hand over the pile to find its direction, and keep the nap running the same way across a project so the scales catch the light evenly. Cut from the back with a rotary cutter or sharp scissors, then shake cut pieces outdoors to release the loose fluff that fresh-cut minky always sheds.
Fit a walking foot before you sew. With two plush faces, this fabric has more loft and more tendency to creep than a single-sided minky, and a walking foot feeds both layers evenly. Lengthen your stitch to about 3.0 to 3.5mm — longer stitches sit cleanly in the 3mm and 4mm pile, reduce puckering, and are easier to remove if you need to adjust a seam.
Use clips instead of pins to hold edges together. Clips grip the thick, slippery pile without leaving holes, they do not distort the fabric the way pins can in plush, and they are quick to remove as you reach the needle. Sew a little more slowly than you would with quilting cotton, and support the weight of larger pieces so they do not drag and stretch the seam.
For pressing, keep heat low and brief. Polyester minky pile can be crushed or marked by a hot iron, so avoid pressing directly on either plush face. Finger-press seams where you can, or press lightly with a press cloth on low heat, then let the pile recover. If you are binding a blanket, that single finishing step is often all a Cloud Cuddle throw needs.
Care Instructions
Care follows the label for this fabric: machine wash cold with like colors, with no fabric softener, and tumble dry on no heat, with no dryer sheet. Softener and dryer sheets coat polyester fibers and dull the softness over time, and high dryer heat is hard on plush pile, so the cold, gentle routine keeps both the printed face and the white backing feeling soft wash after wash.
