Sewing with Grey Ash Cuddle 3 Extra Wide Minky: Seamless Quilt Backings Made Easy
If you love the softness of Cuddle 3 but dread piecing a quilt backing from narrower cuts, an extra-wide solid changes everything. Grey Ash Cuddle 3 Extra Wide Solid Fabric gives you that same smooth, plush hand in a calm grey shade — and in a width that covers most quilts in a single seamless piece. It is a smart, practical choice for backings, and it works beautifully for oversized throws and home projects, too.
What This Fabric Is
This is Shannon Fabrics Cuddle 3, the classic smooth minky plush with a short, even pile. The pile is 3mm, so it feels velvety and cuddly without being bulky in seams. It is 100% polyester and measures 88/90 inches wide, with a weight of 480 grams per linear yard. That extra width is the headline feature: instead of joining two or three lengths and trying to keep the nap and seams aligned, you can often back a quilt with one continuous panel. The solid Grey Ash colour is versatile as well — a soft neutral that pairs easily with busy quilt tops, modern palettes, baby projects, and menswear-inspired throws without competing for attention.
What It Is Best For
Quilt backings are the obvious first use. A seamless backing looks cleaner, feels more luxurious against the skin, and removes a centre seam that could otherwise show through quilting. It is also ideal for larger-than-life throw blankets where you want uninterrupted softness, and for simple home projects the product suggests, such as tablecloths and curtains, where drape and width matter. Because Cuddle 3 has a low, smooth pile, it is also a good option for baby blankets, lap quilts, and comfort quilts — projects meant to be touched, washed, and used every day. For garments and accessories, use it where warmth and softness matter more than structure, such as robe linings, lounge throws to wrap up in, and cosy pillow backs.
How to Sew With It
Cuddle 3 is easier to sew than many plush fabrics, but a few habits make a real difference. First, pay attention to nap: the pile runs in one direction, so mark the top of each piece and keep all pieces running the same way, especially on a backing. Cut with a rotary cutter and mat, or sharp scissors, and expect some fluff at the edges — shake cut pieces outside or over a bin, and keep a lint roller nearby.
Use clips instead of pins where you can. Clips hold the layers without piercing or stretching the knit backing, and they are easier to remove as you sew. If you do pin, pin generously and place pins perpendicular to the seam so layers do not creep. A walking foot is your best friend here: it feeds the top and bottom layers evenly and helps prevent the slight shifting Cuddle can do under a standard presser foot. Lengthen your stitch slightly — around 3.0 to 3.5mm for construction seams — so stitches do not sink and pucker the pile, and test on a scrap first.
Support the weight of a wide backing as you sew or quilt it. Letting 90 inches of fabric drag off the table will pull your seams off course. For pressing, be gentle: use a low heat, press from the wrong side, and avoid crushing the pile with a hot, heavy iron on the right side. A light steam from the back, or finger-pressing seams, is usually enough.
Care Instructions
Care is simple, following the product directions: machine wash cold with like colours, with no fabric softener, and tumble dry low with no dryer sheet. Skipping softener and dryer sheets helps preserve the plush feel. Wash a finished backing or throw the same way, and it should stay smooth and soft wash after wash.
Grey Ash Cuddle 3 Extra Wide is a workhorse: wide enough to save time, neutral enough for almost any top, and plush enough that the back may become everyone's favourite side.
