Some colors do all the talking. Royal Blue Cuddle® 3 from Shannon Fabrics is one of them — a bold, saturated blue on the smooth minky plush that started the Cuddle® story. Shannon describes it as often imitated, never duplicated: the surface is ultra-soft, the color is rich and even, and the fabric is durable enough for everyday use.

What This Fabric Is

Solid Cuddle® 3 is a 100% polyester minky plush with a smooth surface and a short 3mm pile. That low pile is the classic Cuddle® 3 profile: plush and warm without loft or bulk, so it layers cleanly under a quilt top and doesn't overwhelm seams in garments or smaller crafts. This Royal Blue colorway comes 58/60 inches wide and weighs 370 grams per linear yard, giving it a substantial, cozy hand that still drapes well. It is made in South Korea, and Shannon notes the line is available in over 100 different colors and prints — Royal Blue is the confident, primary-blue anchor in that range.

What It's Best For

  • Quilting and quilt backings: Shannon lists quilting among its core uses. At 58/60 inches wide it comfortably backs baby, lap, and many throw quilts in a single width, and the smooth pile makes the back as inviting as the front.
  • Baby products: The short, smooth pile and soft hand suit baby blankets, loveys, and nursery accents — especially in a strong blue that holds its color.
  • Apparel: Robes, lounge pieces, hoodies, and cozy linings benefit from the drape and warmth without heavy bulk.
  • Home decor: Throws, pillow covers, and accent blankets — a single Royal Blue throw adds a bold pop to a neutral room.
  • Pet accessories and crafts: Shannon also lists pet accessories. Think pet blankets and bed covers, plus plush toys, scarves, and other small makes where softness is the point.

How to Sew with It

Mind the nap. Run your hand across the surface: the pile feels smooth in one direction and slightly resistant in the other. Mark the direction on the back with tape or chalk before cutting, and keep every piece oriented the same way so the blue reads evenly in changing light.

Cut cleanly and expect a little fluff. Cut on a large, flat surface with a rotary cutter and ruler or sharp scissors. Minky sheds tiny fibers at cut edges — shake pieces outside after cutting and keep a lint roller at your station.

Use clips, not pins. Cuddle® can creep under pins, and pinholes can linger in the pile. Wonder clips hold layers securely along the edge without shifting. If you do pin, pin generously and keep pins inside the seam allowance.

Fit a walking foot and lengthen your stitch. A walking foot or dual feed keeps the layers feeding evenly and stops the fabric from shifting as you sew. Set your stitch length to about 3.0–3.5mm, reduce presser-foot pressure if your machine allows, and test on scraps first. The 3mm pile doesn't need a specialty needle for most projects — a universal or stretch needle in good condition is a sensible starting point on your test piece.

Press gently, from the back. High heat can crush or glaze polyester pile. Finger-press where you can; if you use an iron, use a low setting on the wrong side only, and never press directly on the pile face.

Care Instructions

Per Shannon's care directions: machine wash cold with like colors, use no fabric softener, and tumble dry low with no dryer sheet. Skipping softeners and dryer sheets matters — their coatings build up on polyester pile and dull both the softness and that vivid Royal Blue color over time.

If you want one solid minky that works across quilts, baby makes, apparel, home decor, and pet projects — in a blue that never looks washed out — Royal Blue Cuddle® 3 is the reliable, bold choice.
