Texture makes a simple project look finished, and Twinkle Luxe Cuddle® Hide from Shannon Fabrics has it built in. This plush minky has a chic, embossed animal-hide design pressed into the pile — soft to the hand, interesting to the eye, and surprisingly versatile.

What This Fabric Is

First, the reassuring part Shannon puts right up front: this "hide" isn't made with real animal hide at all. It is made with plush 100% polyester fibers. Luxe Cuddle® Hide is part of Shannon's Luxe Cuddle® family, with a textured surface that features an animal hide embossed design and a 10mm pile height. That deep pile gives it a cozy, substantial hand — plusher than a short-pile solid minky — while the embossing catches light as the fabric moves, so even a single-fabric throw looks designed.

This Twinkle colorway comes 58/60 inches wide, sold per yard. That width covers most baby blankets, lap quilts, and throws in a single panel. Before you cut, find the pile direction by hand and mark the top of each piece on the wrong side, so every panel runs the same way.

What It's Best For

  • Baby blankets and throws: Shannon notes Hide has been sewn into baby blankets, and the 10mm pile makes a blanket people reach for first, with texture that needs no printed pattern to match.
  • Quilts and quilt backings: Use it as a backing that deserves to be shown off, or let it star in a whole-cloth quilt with simple, widely spaced quilting that doesn't flatten the embossing. At 58/60 inches wide, it backs many throw and lap quilts in one piece.
  • Apparel: Shannon also lists apparel among its uses. Vests, jackets, ponchos, robes, and scarves all benefit — the hide texture gives a plain pattern a boutique finish, with plush softness against the skin.
  • Home decor and crafts: Pillow covers, cushions, bed runners, plush toys, and pet beds all get instant texture from the embossing — no busy prints or extra trim needed.

How to Sew with It

Cut one layer at a time. Long-pile minky shifts when folded, so lay it flat and cut with a rotary cutter or sharp scissors. Cut edges shed loose fibers — shake pieces outside after cutting and clean your machine afterward.

Use clips, not pins. Wonder clips hold thick, plush layers securely along the edge without disappearing into the 10mm pile, and they don't leave holes in the embossed face. If you do pin, pin generously and keep pins inside the seam allowance.

Fit a walking foot and lengthen your stitch. A walking foot or dual feed keeps plush layers feeding evenly, preventing creep. Set stitch length to about 3.0–3.5mm — longer stitches settle into the pile, while short stitches can pucker it. Trim and grade seam allowances to reduce bulk.

Press gently, from the back. High heat can melt polyester fibers and flatten the embossed design. Finger-press where you can; if you use an iron, use a low synthetic setting on the wrong side only, with a press cloth, and test on a scrap first. Never press directly on the pile face.

Care Instructions

For Luxe Cuddle® Hide, follow Shannon's care for this line: machine wash cold with like colors, use no fabric softener, and tumble dry with no heat — and use no dryer sheet. Skipping softeners and dryer sheets matters, because their coatings build up on polyester pile and dull both the softness and the embossed texture over time. Avoid high heat in washing, drying, and pressing, and the pile will stay fluffy wash after wash.

For texture, depth, and serious softness in blankets, quilts, apparel, and decor — without real hide or complicated care — Twinkle Luxe Cuddle® Hide is ready for your next project.
