Bamboo-Cotton Batting for Throw Quilts: Soft Drape in a Handy 60-Inch Square
A throw quilt lives a harder life than a bed quilt. It gets dragged onto the couch, folded over laps, taken outside, washed often, and shared with everyone in the house. The batting inside it needs to be soft and drapey enough to cuddle under, yet strong enough to hold together through all that use. Pellon Bamboo/Cotton Batting Scrim in the 60" x 60" Throw Size Package is made for exactly that job.
What This Batting Is
This is a needle-punched batting blended from 47% rayon fiber made from bamboo, 46% cotton, and 7% polypropylene scrim. The bamboo-derived rayon and cotton give it a soft, natural feel, while the needle punching bonds the fibers together so the batting handles as one stable sheet rather than a loose layer that pulls apart.
The scrim is the quiet hero. It is a soft, thin support layer built into the batting that lends strength and stability without bunching or bearding — that frustrating migration of fibers up through your quilt top. With scrim doing the holding, the batting stays even across the whole quilt, wash after wash.
It is a low-loft batting, measuring about 1/16 of an inch thick. That slim profile produces a flatter, more traditional-looking finished quilt with gentle drape rather than puffy height, which suits a throw you want to fold compactly and use every day.
What It Is Best For
The 60" x 60" size is cut with throw quilts in mind: lap quilts, couch throws, wheelchair quilts, and generous baby or toddler quilts that a child can grow with. It is also a practical size for wall hangings and table toppers, and one package can be cut down for several smaller projects such as placemats, table runners, or crib quilts, with little waste.
Choose this blend when you want the softness and breathability that natural-based fibers bring to a quilt that sits against skin, paired with the easy handling of a needle-punched batting that does not need constant rebasting or fussing to stay flat.
How to Use It
Open the package and let the batting relax flat before you layer your quilt sandwich, so any packaging folds ease out. Layer it between your quilt top and backing, smooth it from the center outward, and baste as you normally would — pins, spray, or thread.
Quilting distance is generous: stitches can be placed up to 10" apart. That wide spacing is a real advantage for throws. You can quilt large, open designs, tie the quilt, or do widely spaced straight-line quilting without worrying that the batting will shift or separate between stitch lines. Of course, quilting more closely is perfectly fine too, and will give a flatter, more heavily textured finish.
Expect shrinkage of 3-5%. If you like the soft, slightly crinkled look a washed quilt gets, that shrinkage works in your favor after the first laundering. If you prefer a flatter finish, take the shrinkage into account when you size and quilt your project.
Tips and Care
Because this batting is only 1/16" thick, it feeds smoothly under a domestic machine, making it a comfortable choice for quilting a throw at home — no wrestling a bulky sandwich through the throat of the machine. For hand quilting, the low loft and needle-punched construction are equally forgiving.
Care is simple: the batting is washable by hand or machine and is dry cleanable, so follow the care needs of your top and backing fabrics. Store any leftover pieces flat or loosely rolled, away from compression, so the loft stays even for your next project.
Soft, stable, and sized right for the quilts people reach for daily — that is what a good throw batting should be.
