Full-Size Cotton Batting With Scrim: Low Loft, Wide Quilting, and a Softer First Wash
Choosing batting for a full-size quilt often comes down to three questions: How flat or puffy do you want the finished quilt to be? How far apart do you plan to quilt? And how will it feel after washing? Pellon Natural Cotton Batting With Scrim in the 81" x 96" Full Size Package answers all three in a practical way. It is a needle-punched cotton batting with a soft scrim, a low 1/16-inch loft, and a recommended maximum stitch distance of 10 inches apart.
What This Batting Is
This batting is made from 93% natural cotton with a 7% polypropylene scrim. The cotton provides the soft, breathable hand quilters expect from a natural-fiber batting. The scrim is the thin stabilizing layer the cotton is needle-punched into. According to Pellon, that soft scrim lends strength and stability without bunching or bearding.
Bearding is when batting fibers work through the quilt top or backing and show on the surface; bunching is batting shifting or clumping inside the sandwich. The scrim helps it hold together as one even sheet, making layering and quilting easier. At 81" x 96", this package is sized for a full-size quilt — measure your top first, and leave the batting sealed until you layer so it stays clean and flat.
Low Loft Means a Flatter, More Traditional Finish
Loft is simply batting thickness. At about 1/16 of an inch, this is a low-loft batting. It will not give you the puffy look that shows quilting in deep relief. Instead, it produces a flatter, lighter quilt with a more traditional drape.
Low loft has practical advantages. The sandwich is thinner and easier to maneuver under a domestic machine, the finished quilt folds smaller and lays smooth on the bed, and it stays comfortable without being overly heavy.
Quilt Up to 10 Inches Apart
The recommended maximum stitch distance for this batting is 10 inches apart. That is generous spacing. Your quilting lines — straight-line, gentle curves, or a widely spaced design — need to be no more than 10 inches apart to keep the batting supported across the whole quilt.
That flexibility lets the design lead. Sparse quilting keeps the quilt softer and drapier. Closer quilting adds texture and durability, and is worth considering if the quilt will be washed often. Just stay at or inside that 10-inch maximum so no large area of batting is left unsupported, including near borders and corners, where spacing is easy to let drift.
Shrinkage, Prewashing, and Care
This batting has an expected shrinkage of 3–5%. A quilt made with it will draw in slightly at the first wash, often giving cotton quilts that familiar soft, lightly crinkled look. If you love that relaxed finish, layer the batting as it comes from the package and let the first wash do the work.
If size control matters most, account for that shrinkage before you cut and quilt. Because the batting is washable, prewashing is an option some quilters use — handle it gently, since a large sheet is most vulnerable when wet, and be consistent about pairing it with washed or unwashed fabrics.
For finished quilts, this batting is washable by hand or machine and is also dry cleanable. Follow your top and backing fabrics' care needs too, and smooth the batting flat before basting — low-loft batting hides fewer lumps. The scrim adds stability, not stiffness: expect a soft cotton hand. For a natural quilt that is flat rather than puffy and forgiving about wide quilting spacing, this batting is built for exactly that job.
