Bamboo-Cotton Batting for Twin Quilts: Soft Drape, Low Loft, and Easy Quilting

A twin quilt gets used hard — pulled up on a dorm bed, folded at the foot of a guest bed, washed often, and dragged around as a couch blanket. The batting inside has to be soft enough to drape, stable enough to quilt without shifting, and easy to care for. Pellon Bamboo/Cotton Batting Scrim in the 72" x 96" Twin Size Package was made for that balance.

What This Batting Is

This is a needle-punched batting blended from 47% rayon fiber made from bamboo, 46% cotton, and 7% polypropylene scrim. The bamboo-derived rayon and cotton give it a soft, breathable hand, while the thin scrim — a lightweight stabilizing layer the fibers are punched through — lends strength and stability without bunching or bearding. Bearding is when batting fibers migrate through the quilt top over time, so a scrim that helps hold the batting together is a real advantage on a quilt that will be washed and handled frequently.

At approximately 1/16 inch thick, this is a low-loft batting. Low loft does not mean thin in a disappointing way — it means a flatter, more traditional profile with excellent drape. Your finished twin quilt will lie smooth, fold compactly for storage, and show off quilting stitches with crisp definition rather than puffing up around them. That makes it a strong choice if you like a classic, close-quilted look or plan detailed stitching.

What It Is Best For

The 72" x 96" size is sized for twin quilts, giving you a ready-to-use package without cutting down a larger roll. It suits bed quilts for kids, teens, dorm rooms, and guest rooms, as well as long throws that need a little extra length. Because it drapes well and stays relatively flat, it is also comfortable for quilts that will double as everyday blankets rather than decorative bed toppers.

The bamboo-cotton blend is a thoughtful pick when you want natural-fiber softness with added stability. The scrim helps the batting hold its shape in the quilt sandwich, which can make basting and quilting feel more controlled, especially on a larger twin-size project where shifting is harder to manage.

How to Use It: Quilting Distance, Shrinkage, and Prep

The recommended maximum distance between stitches is 10 inches apart. That generous spacing gives you flexibility — you can quilt widely for a softer finish, use large-scale designs, or tie a quilt, and still stay within the guideline that keeps the batting secure. Of course, you can quilt much more closely if you prefer dense quilting; 10 inches is the maximum, not a target.

Expect 3–5% shrinkage. That slight shrinkage is what creates the soft, slightly crinkled texture many quilters love after the first wash. If you want that relaxed, lived-in look, you do not need to prewash. If you prefer a flatter, smoother finish with less crinkle, consider how your quilt top and backing fabrics will shrink as well, and test your combination first. Whichever route you choose, allow a little extra room when you layer your sandwich, and trim only after quilting is complete.

To use it, smooth the batting between your pressed top and backing, baste as you normally would — pins, spray, or thread — and quilt within that 10-inch maximum. The needle-punched construction and scrim help it feed steadily, whether you are quilting on a domestic machine or a longarm.

Tips and Care

Let the package relax open before layering so any fold lines ease out. Avoid stretching the batting as you baste; let it lie naturally to prevent distortion after washing. Store any leftover batting rolled or folded loosely in a clean, dry place, out of direct heat.

Finished quilts are washable by hand or machine and dry cleanable — follow your top and backing fabrics' care as the guide, handle gently, and dry low. With its soft drape, low loft, and scrim-backed stability, this batting helps a twin quilt stay comfortable and ready for everyday use.
