Description
Pellon Natural Cotton with Scrim is the everyday low-loft cotton batting in our Pellon line, the one to reach for when you want a flat, traditional quilt that quilts easily on a longarm or a home machine. The 81" x 96" full package covers a full or double bed top, and it works for a queen top with no side drop if the top is 77" or narrower.
The batt is 93% cotton needle-punched through a 7% polypropylene scrim. The scrim is the point: it keeps the thin cotton from stretching or tearing on a frame and lets you quilt up to 10" apart, where a scrimless cotton needs lines every 3" to 4". Loft is 1/16" for a flat, traditional look, shrinkage is 3-5% in the first wash for a soft crinkle, and it washes by hand or machine and dry cleans. The natural color is an unbleached cream; under white fabric use the white version.

- They are close cousins: both are needle-punched cotton over a scrim, low loft, 3-5% shrinkage, quilting up to 10" apart. Warm & Natural is 87.5% cotton to Pellon's 93% and is a little denser and stiffer in the hand; Pellon is slightly softer in the hand. Either makes a flat, traditional quilt. Warm & Natural packages

- Hobbs Heirloom 100% Cotton with Scrim is a loftier, softer batt at about 1/8" that Hobbs recommends quilting within 4". Pellon is thinner at 1/16" and its scrim allows 10" spacing, so it is the easier batting for simple, open quilting. - Full or queen package for my quilt?
- Add at least 4" to each side of your finished top. The full package is 81" x 96", so it covers tops up to about 77" x 92". Most queen tops are wider and need the 90" x 108" queen package. Pellon Natural Cotton queen package
- Natural or white: which do I need?
- Natural is right under most prints and medium to dark solids. Under white, cream or very pale fabrics the unbleached cotton can shadow through and tiny seed flecks may show, so use the Pellon White Cotton with Scrim, which comes in the same sizes. Pellon White Cotton with Scrim full size
- Do I need to pre-wash this batting?
- No. Use it straight from the package. It shrinks 3-5% in the first wash, which pulls the quilting into the soft, crinkled finish most quilters want. If you want a flatter result, wash and dry the finished quilt gently.
- Is it microwave-safe for bowl cozies?
- No. The polypropylene scrim is plastic and should not go in a microwave, even though the batt is mostly cotton. Use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, which is 100% cotton with no scrim, for microwave projects. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
