Description
Hobbs Heirloom Premium 100% Natural Cotton with Scrim, pre-cut for one project. Choose Craft (36" x 45") for wall hangings, table runners and baby projects, Queen (90" x 108") for a queen or smaller bed quilt, or King (120" x 120") for the biggest tops. This is the batting for quilters who want all-cotton with a low loft and a little extra backbone.
The cotton is clean, high-grade, unbleached, long-staple virgin cotton (it carries the Cotton Incorporated seal). A very thin polyester scrim is needle-punched into the fibers, which keeps the batting from stretching or distorting as you handle it and load it on a frame. It is strong but soft, and gets softer with every wash. Hand quilters like how it needles; machine and longarm quilting are excellent. The unbleached color looks best under medium and dark fabrics; test under white.

- Hobbs 100% Cotton vs Hobbs 80/20: which should I buy?
- Both are needle-punched, low loft, shrink 3-5% and quilt within 4". The 100% cotton has a polyester scrim for stability and a slightly denser, more traditional feel with no polyester fiber in the batt itself. The 80/20 has no scrim, a bit softer drape, and the polyester helps it resist bearding. Hand quilters and purists lean to the cotton; longarmers who want the most forgiving batting lean to the 80/20. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 package
- Hobbs Heirloom Cotton vs Warm & Natural?
- Both are needle-punched 100% cotton with a scrim and a flat, low loft. Warm & Natural can be quilted up to 10" apart; Hobbs recommends 4". Hobbs is a little softer and loftier in hand and softens further with washing, while Warm & Natural is firmer and flatter. For wall hangings and wide stitch spacing, Warm & Natural; for a bed quilt you want to soften, Hobbs. Warm & Natural package
- Is this batting microwave-safe for bowl cozies?
- No. The cotton is needle-punched into a thin polyester scrim, and polyester does not belong in a microwave. Use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, which is 100% cotton with no scrim, for microwave projects. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
- What is the Craft size for?
- At 36" x 45" it covers wall hangings, table runners, placemats, baby items and small lap pieces. A crib quilt (45" x 60") does not fit; use the Queen package or the 96" roll cut by the yard.
- Is it right for a white quilt?
- Test first. Unbleached cotton can slightly shadow white and pastel fabrics. For a white top, use the bleached Hobbs cotton with scrim roll or a Tuscany bleached cotton package. Hobbs Bleached Cotton with Scrim 96" roll
- Do I need to pre-wash it?
- No. Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing. Expect 3-5% shrinkage on the first wash, which gives the soft, antique crinkle, and the batting keeps softening with each wash after that.
