Appliqué is one of the fastest ways to add personality to a quilt, a jacket, or a tote bag — but pinning tiny fabric shapes in place while you stitch can be fiddly. Pellon 805 Wonder-Under solves that problem: it's the original paper-backed fusible web, a thin bonding layer that temporarily holds your fabric pieces exactly where you want them before you ever touch a needle.

What Is Fusible Web?

Fusible web is a paper-backed adhesive sheet made specifically for sewing and crafts. Unlike fusible interfacing, which adds body to fabric, fusible web's job is to bond: it sticks fabric to fabric, or fabric to a porous surface. Wonder-Under 805 is 100% polyester, so the bond is durable, and it fuses in mere seconds with a household iron. After fusing, the fabric keeps a soft, flexible hand — no cardboard stiffness, which is exactly what you want for appliqué that drapes and wears well.

What Wonder-Under Is Best For

Wonder-Under 805 is the workhorse of appliqué and no-fuss bonding. Reach for it when you need to:

  • Appliqué shapes — fuse letters, flowers, stars, and quilt-block motifs in place, then stitch the edges for a permanent, washable finish
  • Apparel details — pockets, yokes, collars, and decorative overlays where you want clean edges without pins
  • Home décor — pillow panels, wall-hanging motifs, and table-runner accents
  • Craft projects — bonding fabric to porous surfaces like wood and cardboard for signs, boxes, and mixed-media pieces

This 17" x 10 yard bolt gives you plenty of yardage for repeat projects — craft fairs, classroom batches, or a whole series of appliqué quilts.

How to Use Paper-Backed Fusible Web

The technique is the same for nearly every paper-backed web, and it takes practice only once:

  1. Cut a rough piece slightly larger than your appliqué shape.
  2. Fuse it to the wrong side of your fabric. Place the web (adhesive side) against the wrong side of the fabric, paper side up, cover with a pressing cloth, and press for a few seconds with a hot iron — Wonder-Under bonds fast, so there's no need to linger.
  3. Let it cool, then peel the paper. Wait a few seconds so the adhesive sets, then peel off the paper backing. The adhesive stays on the fabric.
  4. Cut your exact shape. Now cut the fabric to its final appliqué shape, right through the adhesive layer.
  5. Position and fuse. Place the shape adhesive-side down on your project, cover with the pressing cloth, and press again for a few seconds. The adhesive re-melts and bonds the shape to the project fabric.
  6. Stitch if you like. Wonder-Under is 100% machine stitchable — run a straight stitch, zigzag, or satin stitch around the edges for a finished, permanent look that survives laundering.

Tips for Clean Results

Test on a scrap first. Every iron runs a little differently, and fabrics vary. A quick test sandwich tells you the right pressing time for your setup before you commit your project fabric.

Always use a pressing cloth. Adhesive can squeeze out at the edges; a pressing cloth keeps it off your iron soleplate and protects delicate fabrics.

Don't skip the cool-down. Pressing for seconds is real — but so is the need to let the adhesive set before peeling the paper. Peeling too hot can distort the adhesive layer.

Keep the hand soft. One of Wonder-Under's biggest advantages is that fused fabric stays soft and pliable. If your appliqué needs structure instead, pair it with a sew-in or fusible interfacing underneath.

Care

Finished Wonder-Under projects wash and wear like the fabrics they're made from. The 100% polyester adhesive bond is machine stitchable and designed to hold up in apparel, home décor, and craft projects through normal laundering — just follow the care instructions for your outer fabrics.
