Microwaveable kitchen sewing projects are some of the most popular gifts and craft-fair sellers — bowl cozies, casserole warmers, hot pads, potato bags, and oven mitts. But there's one rule you should never break: not all batting is microwave safe. Standard polyester batting can melt, scorch, or even catch fire in a microwave. That's exactly why Pellon created Wrap-N-Zap, a batting made specifically for projects that go in the microwave.

What Makes Batting Microwave Safe?

The answer is simple: 100% natural cotton with no synthetic fibers and no metallic content. Wrap-N-Zap meets all three requirements, so it heats safely alongside your food instead of melting or sparking. Regular polyester or poly-blend battings are off-limits for microwave projects — the synthetic fibers can melt under microwave heat, and any metallic threads or additives are a fire hazard. If your project will ever go in the microwave, Wrap-N-Zap is the batting to reach for.

What Wrap-N-Zap Is Best For

Wrap-N-Zap is a low-loft cotton batting designed for kitchen and craft projects that need insulation. Sew it into:

  • Bowl cozies — the classic beginner project for hot bowls of soup and oatmeal
  • Casserole warmers — keep dishes warm on the way to a potluck
  • Hot pads and oven mitts — everyday kitchen protection
  • Potato and veggie bags — steam vegetables and corn right in the microwave

You can also use it to warm buns, tortillas, and rolls. This 90" x 9 yard bolt gives you plenty of yardage for batch-sewing gifts, craft-fair stock, or a whole round of kitchen makeovers.

Specs That Matter

  • Fiber content: 100% natural cotton — no synthetics, no metallics
  • Loft: approximately 1/16" — thin enough to sew easily, thick enough to insulate
  • Shrinkage: 3–5% — prewash it first (see below)
  • Quilt distance: stitch up to 4" apart
  • Care: hand or machine washable; dry cleanable

Tips for Using Wrap-N-Zap

Prewash before sewing. With 3–5% shrinkage, give the batting a wash and dry first so your finished cozy doesn't pucker after its first laundry cycle. This is the single most-skipped step — and the most noticeable when it's skipped.

Use only 100% cotton everything. The batting is microwave safe, but your project is only as safe as its other components. Pair it with 100% cotton fabrics and 100% cotton thread so nothing else in the cozy melts or scorches.

Respect the 4" quilt distance. Keep your stitching lines no more than 4 inches apart so the layers stay evenly sandwiched and don't shift in the microwave or the wash.

Two layers for extra heat. For casserole carriers and oven mitts that handle serious heat, double up the batting for extra insulation and protection.

Follow your project pattern. Even with microwave-safe materials, always follow the heating instructions for your specific pattern — including recommended microwave times — to keep every project safe.

Care

Finished Wrap-N-Zap projects are easy to live with: they're washable by hand or machine and can be dry cleaned. Toss your bowl cozies and hot pads in the laundry with the rest of your kitchen linens and they'll be ready for the next round of microwave duty.
