What Is Heavy-Duty Wonder-Under?

Wonder-Under is the original paper-backed fusible web — the product that lets you turn any fabric into a fusible fabric. You trace your applique shape onto the paper side, fuse the web to the wrong side of your fabric, peel off the paper, and position the piece on your project. A final press locks it in place, and you can stitch around it if you like.

Pellon 725 Heavy-Duty Wonder-Under takes that same idea and doubles the adhesive. It has twice the holding power of the original 805 Wonder-Under, and that extra grip exists for one reason: heavy fabrics. Denim, canvas, duck cloth, and other thick fabrics need more adhesive to bond reliably, and the heavy-duty version delivers it without changing the soft hand of the finished piece.

When Do You Need the Heavy-Duty Version?

The original Wonder-Under is plenty for quilting cottons and light apparel fabrics. Reach for the heavy-duty 725 when:

  • You're appliqueing denim or canvas. Thicker fabrics have more surface texture and loft, which means a standard fusible web may not grab evenly. Twice the adhesive means the piece stays put through wear and washing.
  • The project takes a beating. Tote bags, jackets, and home decor items get handled hard. Extra holding power keeps applique edges from lifting over time.
  • You're fusing to non-fabric surfaces. Like the original, 725 bonds fabric to fabric or to any porous surface such as wood and cardboard — the stronger bond gives you more margin on heavyweight craft projects.

How to Use It

Working with a paper-backed fusible web is straightforward:

  1. Trace your shape. Draw your applique design in reverse on the paper side of the web. Because 725 has no grain, you can cut and apply it in any direction.
  2. Fuse to your fabric. Press the web (paper side up) onto the wrong side of your fabric with a hot iron, following the fabric's heat tolerance.
  3. Cut and peel. Cut out your shape, peel off the paper backing, and position the applique on your project. At this stage it's lightly tacked in place — you can still lift and reposition it.
  4. Press to bond. Cover with a press cloth if needed and press firmly to complete the bond.
  5. Stitch if you want. The fused applique is secure, but an edge stitch (straight, zigzag, or satin) adds a decorative finish and extra durability.

Tips for Best Results

  • Prewash your fabrics. Prewash and press both your applique fabric and your base fabric before fusing. Differential shrinkage after the fact is the most common cause of puckered applique.
  • Test the heat. The bond needs a hot enough iron to melt the adhesive fully, especially on heavy fabrics. Test on a scrap first — you want complete adhesion without scorching.
  • Cut the web smaller than the fabric. Trim the fusible web just inside the fabric edges so adhesive doesn't squeeze out and gum up your iron or press cloth.
  • It's 100% polyester. The web itself is 100% polyester, so it will never stiffen your applique or add bulk — the fabric keeps its soft hand after fusing.

Care

Finished projects can be washed or dry-cleaned according to the fabric's own care instructions. The fused bond is designed to hold through normal laundering, and because the web adds no stiffness, garments and quilts drape naturally.

Why Keep It on Hand

If you applique anything heavier than quilting cotton — a denim jacket back, canvas tote pockets, a patch on duck cloth — standard fusible web can let you down. A 17-inch by 10-yard bolt of Heavy-Duty Wonder-Under gives you the stronger bond those fabrics need, with the same no-grain, easy-trace workflow as the original. For quilters and crafters who work across fabric weights, it's the upgrade that prevents the "why is this peeling?" problem before it starts.
