When Your Project Needs More Than Interfacing

Standard fusible interfacing gives fabric gentle support, but some projects need serious backbone. Placemats that actually lie flat, lamp shades that hold their curve, drapery headers that stand crisp year after year — those call for a stabilizer with real rigidity. That's exactly what Pellon® 809 Décor-Bond® Stabilizer was designed to do.

What Décor-Bond Is

Décor-Bond is a firm, nonwoven, fusible stabilizer made from 100% polyester. Unlike lightweight shirt interfacings, it's built to deliver extra crispness and structural support. It comes in a generous 45" x 10-yard bolt in white, so a single purchase covers large home-décor projects like full drapery valances or a full set of placemats.

What It's Best For

  • Placemats and table runners — fusing a layer of Décor-Bond behind your fabric gives them the body to lie flat and resist curling.
  • Lamp shades — it provides the firm yet workable foundation needed to form and hold the shade's shape.
  • Drapery headers — creates a crisp, tailored top edge that keeps its pleats and structure.
  • Director chairs and home accents — anywhere a fabric panel needs to stand up or hold its form under light stress.

For areas that require extra rigidity, Pellon recommends using two layers — fuse one layer on, then add a second for maximum firmness.

How to Fuse It: Steps for a Strong, Lasting Bond

  1. Cut and trim. Cut the stabilizer slightly smaller than your fabric piece so the fusible side doesn't reach past the fabric edge and stick to your iron or pressing surface.
  2. Test first. Always test-fuse a scrap of your fabric and stabilizer combination. Different fabrics tolerate heat differently, and a test swatch lets you confirm the bond and check for any shrinkage or discoloration.
  3. Position the fusible side down. Place the stabilizer glue-side down on the wrong side of the fabric. Use a dry iron on a wool/cotton setting — most fusible stabilizers call for firm pressure and heat, no steam.
  4. Press, don't slide. Hold the iron in place for 10–15 seconds per section, applying even downward pressure rather than sliding the iron around. Sliding can shift the stabilizer and distort the fabric.
  5. Let it cool. Allow the piece to cool completely before handling. The bond strengthens as it cools.

Tips and Care

  • Double up for structure. If one layer isn't rigid enough for your project — a stiff lampshade or a formal drapery header, for instance — fuse a second layer. Two layers of Décor-Bond provide noticeably more body than one.
  • Watch the edges. Because Décor-Bond is firm, consider enclosing raw edges in binding or a facing so they stay smooth and comfortable to the touch, especially on placemats and tray cloths.
  • No prewashing needed. Since it's 100% polyester and nonwoven, Décor-Bond won't shrink. Home-décor projects that get occasional spot cleaning are unaffected.
  • Storage. Keep the bolt or roll flat rather than folded tightly — sharp creases in a firm stabilizer can be hard to press out.

The Bottom Line

If your project list leans toward home décor — placemats, shades, headers, and structured accents — a standard interfacing won't cut it. Pellon 809 Décor-Bond gives you a firm, reliable, fusible foundation that holds its shape project after project.
