Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex: The Interfacing Every Sewist Should Know

If there's one interfacing every sewist should know, it's Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex. This all-purpose woven cotton fusible is the go-to for adding crisp, stable support without stiffness. Here's what it does and how to use it right.

What Is Shape-Flex?

SF101 is a woven fusible interfacing made of 100% cotton. That woven structure is the key difference: unlike non-woven interfacings, it moves with your fabric, giving a clean, professional finish that never feels papery. You fuse it to the wrong side of fabric with an iron, and it adds body and stability exactly where you need it.

What Is It For?

  • Garment details: Collars, cuffs, yokes, plackets, facings, and waistbands — anywhere a garment needs to hold its shape.
  • Bag making: A favorite for totes and purses, giving soft structure without rigidity.
  • Light to medium fabrics: Works on woven and knit fabrics to firm them up for construction.
  • Embroidery and appliqué: Stabilizes fabric behind stitching so designs stay crisp.

How to Fuse It Correctly

  1. Cut to size — cut the interfacing slightly smaller than your pattern piece so it doesn't extend into seam allowances.
  2. Place adhesive-side down on the wrong side of your fabric. The fusible side feels slightly rough or bumpy.
  3. Press, don't iron. Set your iron to medium heat with steam, press down firmly for 10–15 seconds, lift, and move to the next section. Sliding the iron can shift the interfacing.
  4. Let it cool flat before moving the piece — the bond sets as it cools.
  5. Test first. Always fuse a scrap to check adhesion and make sure the heat doesn't damage your fashion fabric.

Tips for Best Results

  • Pre-shrink: If your project will be washed, pre-shrink both the fabric and the interfacing (a quick soak and air-dry for the interfacing) so they shrink together.
  • Store it rolled or flat. Folded interfacing develops creases that can show through; the 10-yard bolt format keeps it smooth.
  • Match weight to fabric. SF101 suits light to medium fabrics. For heavy canvas or denim, step up to a heavier interfacing.
  • Trim bulk: In collars and cuffs, trim the interfacing just inside the seam line to reduce bulk at the turn.
