What Is Sew-In Stabilizer?

Interfacing comes in two flavors: fusible and sew-in. Fusible interfacing has an adhesive coating that melts onto fabric with heat, while sew-in stabilizer is held in place with stitches instead of glue. Pellon® 40 is a mid- to heavyweight sew-in stabilizer made from 100% polyester, and it delivers firm, crisp support where you need structure without the shine or stiffness change that fusing can sometimes cause.

Because there's no adhesive layer, Pellon 40 won't alter the hand of your fashion fabric the way a fused layer can — the fabric keeps its original drape, with the stabilizer adding backbone behind the scenes.

What Pellon 40 Is Best For

This is a midweight stabilizer with a firm hand, so it's ideal for projects that need shape and body:

  • Hat brims — keeps the brim crisp and structured instead of floppy.
  • Tote bags and purses — gives sides and bottoms the stand-up body that lightweight interfacing can't.
  • Needlecraft backings — provides a firm foundation behind counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, and crewel work.
  • Home décor projects — valances, placemats, and fabric bins benefit from its firm support.

As a rule of thumb: reach for a sew-in stabilizer like Pellon 40 when the project needs real structure, and choose fusible for lighter-duty shaping like collars and facings.

How to Use Sew-In Stabilizer

Sew-in stabilizer is easy to work with — no iron-on adhesive to worry about, and no risk of bubbling or glue residue.

  1. Cut it slightly smaller than your fabric pieces, or trim it out of the seam allowance after pinning, so it doesn't add bulk in the seams.
  2. Baste it to the wrong side of the fabric within the seam allowance, or quilt/stitch it in place as your pattern directs. Pin generously so layers don't shift.
  3. Construct the project as usual — the stabilizer becomes a permanent layer inside the finished piece.
  4. Grade and trim seams to reduce bulk where multiple layers meet, especially on bags and brims.

Tips for Great Results

  • No pre-washing needed. Pellon 40 is 100% polyester, so it won't shrink — cut and sew with confidence straight off the bolt.
  • Layer for extra firmness. For very structured projects like hat brims, you can use two layers basted together.
  • Use a sharp needle. A fresh universal or sharp needle pierces the dense non-woven stabilizer cleanly without skipped stitches.
  • Test on a swatch first. Sew a small sample of fabric plus stabilizer to check the body and hand before cutting into your project.

Care

Finished items with Pellon 40 sew-in stabilizer are machine washable and dryable — follow the care instructions for your outer fabric. Because the stabilizer is polyester, it won't shrink or distort in the wash, and the sewn-in construction means it stays put for the life of the project.
