Interfacing That Stretches With Your Fabric: How Stretch Fuse Works for Active Wear, Dresses, and Undergarments
Most interfacing is designed to stop fabric from moving — right for a crisp collar, wrong for a fabric meant to stretch. Fuse a rigid layer to a knit and the garment loses the quality you chose it for. Pellon® 460 Stretch Fuse™ solves that: it is a lightweight fusible interfacing that stretches in multiple directions, adding body and shape while still moving with the fabric.
What Stretch Fuse Is
Stretch Fuse is an interfacing, not a batting — the hidden layer applied to the wrong side of a fabric to give selected areas more support, body, and shape. It is made from 100% polyurethane, is fusible on application, and comes on a 19-inch by 10-yard bolt in white.
Pellon describes it as lightweight, multi-directional, and stretchy, and as suitable for fabrics of all kinds. Rather than holding a piece rigid, it provides soft and supple results while maintaining body and shape. That combination — support without stiffness — is the whole point of the product.
It also includes a protective liner, which Pellon notes aids in the fusing process with stretch fabrics — helpful, because stretch fabrics can shift or distort under an iron while you bond a layer to them.
Why Multi-Directional Stretch Matters
Many modern fabrics stretch across their width, along their length, or in both directions. A multi-directional stretch interfacing follows that movement instead of fighting it in one direction and locking it in another. A supported neckline or waist section can keep its shape and still stretch when the wearer moves or pulls the garment on, recovering its intended shape rather than feeling board-like.
What It Is Best For
Pellon specifically names active wear, dresses, and undergarments as great uses for Stretch Fuse. Within those projects, look to it where a stretch fabric needs quiet help:
- Active wear: Support sections that need to hold their shape through movement, without giving up stretch and comfort.
- Dresses: Add gentle body to necklines, facings, and waist sections while preserving how the dress moves and drapes.
- Undergarments: Provide soft, supple support in a garment worn close to the body, where a stiff interfacing would feel harsh.
- Other stretch projects: A useful option whenever a fabric's stretch is part of the design, not a problem to be eliminated.
If a project needs crisp, firm, non-stretch shaping — a structured collar or a rigid craft base — choose a firm interfacing instead. Stretch Fuse is for support that flexes.
How to Use It
- Test on a scrap first. Fuse a small piece to a scrap of your actual fabric, let it cool, then stretch it in every direction the garment will stretch. It should feel soft and supple, with added body — not stiff or puckered.
- Cut without stretching. Lay both fabric and interfacing flat and relaxed while you cut. A fabric pulled taut during fusing can relax afterwards into puckers.
- Use the protective liner. Keep the liner in place during fusing; Pellon provides it specifically to aid the fusing process with stretch fabrics.
- Place the fusible side against the wrong side. Align it carefully before applying heat, with neither layer extended or twisted.
- Press, do not slide. Set the iron down, lift, and move on. Sliding can drag a stretch fabric out of shape before the bond sets.
- Let it cool flat before sewing. Let the fused piece cool in its relaxed position so the bond sets, then handle the layers as one.
Tips and Care
Interface selectively. Support belongs in specific areas — a neckline, a facing, a section that needs to hold its shape — while the rest of the fabric is better left free to move. Match interfacing to fabric by weight and color: this white, lightweight bolt suits white and light-colored fabrics.
Prepare your fabric as you intend to care for the finished garment before fusing, and afterwards follow the outer fabric's care requirements. Done well, Stretch Fuse stays invisible: the garment keeps its stretch, feels soft, and holds its shape.
