Tailored Support Without Stiffness: How Tailor's Elite Shapes Suits and Coats

A tailored jacket lives or dies on what you cannot see. If the lapels roll badly, the collar sags, or the front hangs without intention, the problem is rarely the outer fabric alone — it is the support underneath it. Pellon® 855F Tailor's Elite™ is a high-performance fusible interfacing from Pellon's family of luxury fusibles, designed to give suits and coats controlled support and tailored shaping while still delivering soft, supple results. It comes in white on a 20-inch by 10-yard bolt.

What Tailor's Elite Is

Tailor's Elite is an interfacing, not a batting or a quilt layer. Interfacing is the hidden layer bonded to the wrong side of your fabric to change how that fabric behaves — firmer where structure is needed, more stable where a garment must hold a line — while the fashion fabric remains what people see on the outside.

It is a stitch-reinforced, fusible, nonwoven interfacing made from 100% polyester. The stitch reinforcement is worth noting: this is not a plain, papery nonwoven. It is built for garments that need real shaping, yet its promise is a soft, supple hand rather than a stiff, boardy one. That combination — control without harshness — is exactly what tailored clothing asks for.

Because it is fusible, it bonds with the heat of an iron on one side, so there is no separate sew-in step to anchor it. Once fused, the fabric and interfacing move as a single, better-behaved layer.

What It Is Best For

Tailor's Elite is designed for medium to heavy weight woven and knit fabrics, including gabardine, poplin, linen, fine wale corduroy, synthetic suede, double knit, wool, and wool blends — a list that reads like a tailored wardrobe in itself.

  • Suits: Give jacket fronts, lapels, collars, and facings controlled support that keeps a tailored silhouette sharp through wear.
  • Coats: Add shaping and stability to heavier outer fabrics without making them feel like cardboard.
  • Wool and wool blends: Support classic tailoring fabrics while preserving the supple drape that makes them worth sewing.
  • Double knit garments: Stabilize areas of a knit that need to hold a tailored line, such as fronts, collars, and waistbands.
  • Linen and corduroy pieces: Firm up structured garments in fabrics that soften with wear, so the shape you cut is the shape that lasts.

If your fabric is very light or sheer, this is likely more interfacing than you need. Matching the weight of the interfacing to the weight of the fabric is the most important choice in this category.

How to Use It

  1. Test on a scrap first. Fuse a small piece to an offcut of your actual fabric and judge the result: supported and shapely, but still supple. Tailoring fabrics are an investment, and a short test protects them.
  2. Cut the interfacing from the same pattern piece as the section you are supporting — a front, collar, lapel facing, cuff, or waistband. Trim it just inside the seam allowances where you want to keep bulk out of the seams.
  3. Place the fusible side against the wrong side of your fabric, aligning the pieces carefully before any heat is applied.
  4. Press, do not slide. Work in sections, lifting the iron and setting it down on the next area. Sliding can shift the interfacing before the bond takes hold.
  5. Let the piece cool flat before moving or sewing it, so the bond sets completely and the two layers behave as one.

Tips and Care

Interface selectively. Tailored garments need support in their structural zones — fronts, collars, lapels, facings, and waistbands — while other areas are often better left to drape on their own. Fusing everything can take the life out of a garment just as surely as fusing nothing takes out its shape.

Prepare your fashion fabric the way you intend to care for the finished garment, so any change in the fabric happens before the interfacing is bonded to it. Once the garment is made, care for it according to the outer fabric's requirements; the interfacing's job is to support that fabric faithfully through wear.

For anyone sewing suits, coats, or other tailored pieces, Tailor's Elite offers the combination that matters most: real, controlled shaping underneath, and a soft, natural hand on the surface.
