Most fusible interfacings come in narrow widths, which is fine for a collar or a cuff — but it becomes a problem the moment your pattern piece is wider than the bolt. You end up piecing interfacing, with seams that can show through or create uneven support. A wide bolt solves that in one cut.
What This Product Is
Pellon® SF101 Shape-Flex® is an all-purpose woven fusible interfacing made from 100% cotton. This bolt is 60 inches wide by 10 yards long, in white — three times the width of the standard 20-inch Shape-Flex® bolt. It is fusible on one side, so it bonds to your fabric with heat and pressure from an iron rather than needing to be basted or sewn in place as a separate layer.
The word "woven" matters. Because Shape-Flex® is woven cotton rather than a non-woven web, it has a grain and a drape much like fabric itself. It moves with your fashion fabric, adding crisp, stable support without a stiff, papery feel — so detail areas hold their shape but still feel like clothing, not cardboard.
What It Is Best For
In garments, Shape-Flex® provides crisp support for collars, cuffs, yokes, pockets, facings, and other detail areas where a clean edge and lasting shape matter. It is intended for light to medium woven and knit fabrics, including oxford cloth, chambray, gingham, madras, tattersall, pincord, flannel, and polyester/cotton blends — the everyday shirtings, dress fabrics, and quilting-weight cottons most sewists already have on hand.
It can also add body and permanent stability when used as a backing for needlework and punch embroidery, holding the ground fabric steady while you stitch.
The 60-inch width changes what else it is practical for. The wide bolt is a bag maker's favorite because you can cut full-width pieces for totes and pouches in a single pass, with no piecing. The same is true for garment yardage: interface a full front, a wide facing, or a long placket without a seam in your support layer. One continuous piece means even support across the whole project and no ridge where two narrower pieces overlapped.
How to Use It
Start by cutting the Shape-Flex® to match the fabric piece you want to support — for facings and detail areas, that is usually the pattern piece itself. Place the fusible side against the wrong side of your fabric; the adhesive side is the one that will bond when heated. Always test first on a scrap of your actual fabric to check the hand and make sure the bond suits the weight you are working with.
Press to fuse, working across the piece so the entire surface bonds evenly, then let it cool before moving it — a bond that is still warm can shift. Avoid sliding the iron in a way that drags the interfacing out of alignment before it has bonded. Once fused, sew your project as usual; the interfacing now travels with the fabric as a single layer.
A few tips help you get the most from the wide bolt. Cut with the grain of the woven interfacing running the same direction as your fabric's grain so both layers move together. Lay out smaller pieces like collars and pockets in the margins alongside a large bag panel to minimize waste. And because this is the white version, it suits light-colored fabrics where a darker interfacing could show through.
Care and Keeping
Because Shape-Flex® is 100% cotton and becomes part of your fabric layer once fused, care for the finished project according to the fashion fabric you bonded it to. The support is permanent, keeping collars crisp, facings flat, and bag bodies structured through wear and use. Store the bolt away from direct heat so the fusible side stays ready for your next cut.
If you have been piecing narrow interfacing for wide projects, this bolt removes that workaround entirely: one width, one cut, and the same trusted woven support.
