Backing a Quilt in Green: How Cactus Cuddle 3 Minky Works Seamlessly

What This Fabric Is

The Green Cactus Cuddle 3 Extra Wide Solid Fabric from Shannon Fabrics is a plush minky made from 100% polyester, in a fresh cactus green solid. It is the extra-wide version of Shannon's familiar Cuddle 3: the same smooth, short-pile plush, but cut 88/90 inches wide instead of a standard minky width. The pile is 3mm, so it feels soft and velvety without adding a lot of bulk, and at 480 grams per linear yard it has a reassuring, blanket-like weight. Because it is one solid color with a low, even pile, the quilting pattern — not a print — becomes the design on the back of your quilt.

That width is the real headline. At 90 inches, this fabric can back most throw, twin, and double quilts in a single seamless piece, and Shannon also suggests it for tablecloths, curtains, and oversized cozy throw blankets.

How to Choose a Backing: Start With the Size Math

Use the standard rule first: your backing should measure your quilt top plus 8 inches in both directions — 4 extra inches on every side. That overhang gives a longarm quilter room to load and clamp the quilt, and gives a home quilter room to baste and quilt right to the edges without running short.

Now run that number against a 90-inch width. A 60 by 72 inch throw needs a 68 by 80 inch backing, which fits easily across one width at about 2 1/4 yards. A 68 by 88 inch twin needs a 76 by 96 inch backing — still one width, at about 2 3/4 yards. Once your top is wider than about 82 inches, the plus-8 rule pushes you past a single width, so plan to seam two lengths, match the pile direction, and offset the seam from the center.

Cotton vs. Minky vs. Flannel

A 108-inch cotton wideback is the stable, breathable default: no stretch, crisp pressing, and seamless coverage for larger quilts. Flannel sits in the middle — brushed cotton that is warmer and softer than quilting cotton and still fairly stable, though usually narrower. Minky like Cuddle 3 is the comfort choice: polyester plush that feels warm and soft against the skin the moment you wrap up in the quilt. The trade-offs are a little stretch, more drape, and a 90-inch rather than 108-inch width. Choose cotton for structure and maximum coverage, flannel for a cozy middle ground, and this cactus green minky when the back is meant to be cuddled — for kids' quilts, couch throws, and anyone who always flips a quilt to its soft side.

Working Tips: Folds, Prewashing, and Longarm Loading

Pressing the fold: Do not press minky like cotton. High heat can damage polyester pile, so keep a hot iron off the plush face. Lay the fabric flat and let fold lines relax, smooth them out by hand, and if a crease persists, use only light, low heat from the smooth back side.

Prewashing: Polyester minky does not shrink the way cotton does, so prewashing is optional and many quilters use it straight from the bolt to keep the pile at its plushest. If you do wash first, follow the care directions below exactly — especially no fabric softener and no dryer sheet.

Longarm loading: Load minky with the stretch running across the frame, not lengthwise, and keep tension gentle so the back does not ripple. The 3mm pile adds a little loft of its own, so a lighter batting often quilts best. At a domestic machine, a walking foot and a slightly longer stitch help keep the plush layer feeding evenly.

Care

Follow Shannon's care instructions for this fabric: machine wash cold with like colors, no fabric softener, and tumble dry low with no dryer sheet. Softeners and dryer sheets coat the polyester fibers and mat the pile down, so skipping them is what keeps Cuddle 3 feeling smooth and soft wash after wash.
