What This Fabric Is
The Luxe Cuddle Hide Cardinal Fabric from Shannon Fabrics is a plush minky made from 100% polyester fibers — no real animal hide involved, despite the name. What gives it its character is the embossed animal hide design pressed into a textured surface and a deep cardinal color, paired with a generous 10mm pile height. One touch tells the story: this is a soft, lofty, cozy fabric made to be felt, not just seen.
Unlike the 108-inch cotton widebacks in this series, Luxe Cuddle Hide is 58/60 inches wide. That makes it wider than standard 44-inch quilting cotton, so it covers throws and baby quilts with far less piecing, but it is not a seamless king-size backing in a single width. Shannon suggests it for baby blankets and apparel, quilts, home decor and more — anywhere that plush texture matters.
How to Choose a Backing: Start With the Size Math
Use the standard rule first: your backing should measure your quilt top plus 8 inches in both directions — 4 extra inches on every side. That overhang gives a longarm quilter room to load the quilt, and gives a home quilter room to baste and quilt out to the edges without running short.
Now run that number against a 58/60-inch width. A 40 by 50 inch baby quilt needs a 48 by 58 inch backing, which fits across one width at about 1-2/3 yards. A 50 by 60 inch throw needs a 58 by 68 inch backing, right at the limit of one width, at just under 2 yards. Anything wider needs seaming: join two lengths with a generous seam allowance, keep the pile direction the same on both pieces, and place the seam where quilting will help it settle.
Cotton vs. Minky vs. Flannel
A 108-inch cotton wideback is the stable, breathable default: no stretch, crisp pressing, and one seamless piece for most quilts up to about 100 inches wide. Flannel is brushed cotton in the middle — warmer and softer than quilting cotton, still fairly stable, but usually narrower. Minky like this Luxe Cuddle is the comfort choice: 100% polyester plush with real loft and warmth against the skin. The trade-offs are stretch, bulk, and in this case a narrower width that may need piecing. Choose cotton for structure and coverage, flannel for a cozy middle ground, and a textured minky like Hide when the back of the quilt is meant to be the part everyone reaches for.
Working Tips: Folds, Prewashing, and Longarm Loading
Pressing the fold: Do not press minky the way you press cotton. High heat can damage polyester pile, so skip the hot iron on the plush face. Instead, let the fabric relax flat, smooth folds out by hand, and if a crease persists, use only light, low heat from the backing side. Embossed texture like the hide design is part of the fabric — protect it rather than flattening it.
Prewashing: Polyester minky does not shrink like cotton, so prewashing is optional. Many quilters use it straight from the bolt, which also keeps the pile at its plushest. If you do wash first — for a baby blanket, for example — follow the care directions below exactly, especially no fabric softener.
Longarm loading: Load minky with the stretch running across the frame, not lengthwise, and keep tension gentle. The 10mm pile adds loft, so a lighter batting often quilts best. Pin evenly, check pile direction across any seam, and use a walking foot at a domestic machine to keep the plush layer from shifting.
Care
Follow Shannon's care instructions for this fabric: machine wash cold with like colors, no fabric softener, tumble dry with no heat, and no dryer sheet. Heat and softeners are the enemies of minky — softener coats the fibers and mats the pile, and heat can dull that plush texture. Wash it cold and dry it cool, and the cardinal color and 10mm softness will stay inviting wash after wash.
