All week we've talked thread — the one essential spool, cotton vs. poly, bobbins, color, specialty threads. Today, let's put it all together: the thread collection that covers every project you'll ever start.
The Essential Collection
🧵 Neutrals in 50wt (the foundation) — Light gray, medium gray, cream, and white. These four spools piece and quilt 90% of everything. Buy them big.
🎯 40wt for visible quilting — A few favorites in your go-to colors. When you want the quilting to show, this is the weight that shows it.
⚖️ Bobbin-friendly 60wt — A cone or prewounds in neutral. Less bulk, more yardage, balanced stitches.
💪 A strong polyester — For minky, bags, kids' quilts, and anything that will be washed to death.
✨ One or two showstoppers — A variegated you love and a metallic for holiday magic. That's plenty to start.
Build It Smart
Don't buy fifty spools at once. Buy the neutral foundation first from a quality line, then add colors project by project. In two years you'll own a collection where every spool earns its spot — and none of it is the bargain-bin stuff that fails the tug test.
Linda's Quilting Tip 💡
Store threads away from sunlight and dust, and note the weight on the spool end with a fine marker if the label wears — future you, mid-project, will be grateful.
Remember
A great thread collection isn't the biggest one. It's the one where you can grab the right spool for any project without thinking twice.
Happy Quilting!
