Hey everyone. Today you will learn how to sew a warm pair of curtains from one wide piece of fabric.

Here we go.

Meet the Fabric First

This is the Brown Leather Crackles Cotton Wideback Fabric Per Yard from Oasis Fabrics.

It is cotton. That matters for curtains.

Cotton presses crisp. It hangs in soft folds. It sews without fighting you.

And this one is wide. Really wide.

The width of fabric is 118 inches. That is the number to remember.

Most quilting cottons are around 44 inches wide. One width is rarely enough for a curtain panel.

With 118 inches, you can split one cut down the middle. Just like that, you have two panels.

The color is brown leather. Warm and rich. Think chocolate and dark brown together.

It has that Crackles texture all through it. Think a soft, broken texture instead of a flat solid.

That texture is your friend here. It adds interest in the light. It also hides a little wrinkle or dust.

We're not reinventing the wheel here. We're just using the width we already have.

The Project: A Pair of Curtains

A pair of curtains is really two big, hemmed rectangles. That is the beauty of it.

They warm up a window fast. They soften a room. They give you privacy at night, too.

For this pair, we will aim for two finished panels. Each one will be about 56 inches wide by 84 inches long.

That size suits a lot of standard windows. Measure your own window first, from the rod down to where you want the hem to land.

Why does this fabric suit curtains so well? Three reasons.

First, the 118-inch width makes both panels from one cut. No piecing widths together.

Second, the deep brown color feels warm and grounded. It goes nicely with wood and cream walls.

Third, the Crackles texture looks finished all by itself. No extra trim needed. Completely up to you if you add any.

Materials List

  • 2 1/2 yards of Brown Leather Crackles Cotton Wideback Fabric Per Yard
  • All-purpose thread to match
  • Curtain rod, already hung
  • Rotary cutter, long ruler, and big cutting mat
  • Tape measure, chalk, and pins or clips
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Sewing machine with a universal needle, size 80/12

Two and a half yards gives you a piece 90 inches long by 118 inches wide. Cut it in half, and each panel starts at about 59 by 90 inches. The hems and top pocket take up the rest.

Brief Steps

Step 1: Square it up. Lay the fabric flat and smooth it out. Trim one edge straight, then measure from there.

Step 2: Cut your panels. Cut the piece down the middle of the width. Now you have two panels, each about 59 by 90 inches.

Step 3: Hem the sides. On each long side, fold in 1/2 inch and press. Fold in another 1/2 inch and press again. Stitch close to the inner fold.

Step 4: Make the bottom hem. Fold the bottom up 1 1/2 inches and press. Fold up another 1 1/2 inches. Stitch across, close to the inner fold.

Step 5: Make the rod pocket. At the top, fold down 1/2 inch and press. Fold down another 3 inches and press. Stitch close to that lower fold, all the way across.

Step 6: Hang and check. Slide the rod through both pockets. Hang them up. Check the length before you call it done.

Use a 3.0 millimeter stitch length for the hems, roughly 8 to 9 stitches per inch. Just like that, you have a pair of curtains.

Practical Tips From My Window

Press every fold before you stitch it. A good press is half the sewing, folks.

Hang the rod before you cut. Measure from the rod itself, not the window frame. Rods sit higher than we remember.

Want yours longer or shorter? No problem. Add or take away length in Step 2. The width plan stays the same.

Prefer rings and clips? Skip the rod pocket, hem the top edge, then clip rings on evenly. My preference is the pocket. Simple and sturdy.

Slow down at the thick corners. That is where the folds stack up. Ease through them, or the needle can deflect.

And here is your permission beat, folks. It does not have to be perfect.

You are your own worst critic. Your family will see a warm, cozy window, not one slightly soft corner.

Take your time. It's not a race. If I can do this, y'all can do it.

Thanks so much for sewing along with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
