Sun Print Whisper - Alison Glass, Turned Down to a Whisper
Alison Glass's annual Sun Print collections are a modern-quilting institution, and Whisper is the low-volume edition: the signature hand-drawn motifs printed tone-on-tone in barely-there color. Low-volume prints are the modern quilter's neutrals - backgrounds with personality that read as texture from a distance. In stock: Zebra Dwell, Magenta Dwell, Marigold Dwell, Pigeon Enough, and Emerald Enough. Buy them as background yardage the way you would buy solids - two or three yards each - because low-volume backgrounds are what modern quilts run out of first.

Using Low-Volume Prints Well
Two working rules. First, mix them: three or four different low-volume prints as a background reads richer than one, and because Whisper's motifs vary while the values match, they blend seamlessly. Second, audition in grayscale - photograph your pull and desaturate it; if the background prints disappear into each other and the feature fabrics pop, the quilt will work. Piece them with a fine 50wt like Aurifil so seams stay flat in all that light-colored negative space, and quilt with a near-invisible thread - So Fine 401 Snow or MicroQuilter from the Thread Hub - so the texture, not the thread, carries the show.
