It's fine (so seams press flat and points nest), it's strong (two-ply long-staple cotton), and it works top and bobbin in every machine we've ever met. The big 1300-meter spools are the workhorses - starting points from the wall: 2312 Ermine (my pick for the one neutral that blends with everything), 6722 Sea Biscuit, 1285 Medium Bark for darker scrap quilts, and 6726 Airstream. The 200-meter small spools (like 6722, 6732, 6733, 6734, and 6738) are perfect for color-matched binding and applique projects where you need the exact shade but not a kilometer of it.
40wt: The Quilting Weight
One step heavier, the 40wt 1000m spools are built to be seen - machine quilting, decorative topstitching, and anywhere you want the stitch line to show. Aurifil Weight Logic (Backwards on Purpose)
Thread weight numbers run backwards: higher number, finer thread. 50wt is finer than 40wt. The rule of thumb: 50wt to construct the quilt, 40wt to decorate it. Bobbin-wise, 50wt in the bobbin under a 40wt top is a classic longarm pairing that reduces bulk in dense quilting.

Use a smaller needle than you think - 80/12 or even 70/10 for 50wt piecing, since the fine thread doesn't need a big needle hole. Slow down slightly on the 200m spools; they're cross-wound and feed best off a vertical spool pin. And buy your neutrals in 1300m: at typical piecing rates a big spool of Ermine or Sea Biscuit outlasts a dozen project threads.
