Why would I use black batting?
Dark and black-background quilts. White or natural batting fibers can migrate through dark fabrics (bearding) and show as pale specks, and needle holes flash light batting underneath. Black batting makes both problems invisible — it's the professional finish for Amish-style, modern black-background, and dark art quilts.
How many yards do I need at 108" or 120" width?
Wide battings run the width across your quilt, so buy the quilt's length plus margin: a queen at 108" wide needs about 3–3.25 yards, and a king on the 120" width roughly 3.5 yards. The extra width means even oversized tops clear in one piece with no batting seam.
Is by-the-yard Hobbs the same batting as the rolls?
Yes — all three specialty widths are cut from the same Hobbs Heirloom roll stock the studio uses, with identical 80/20 construction, loft, and quilting spacing. By the yard simply lets you buy one quilt's worth of a specialty width you'd rarely need a whole roll of.
