The Applique Bonding Standard
Pellon 805 Wonder-Under is one of the most widely used products in quilting and fabric crafting -- a double-sided fusible web that bonds fabric to fabric with iron heat, enabling raw-edge machine applique and fusible applique techniques that have transformed what is achievable in textile art and quilting. Applied to the wrong side of applique fabric, Wonder-Under allows shapes to be fused permanently to a quilt top, then finished with machine satin stitch, blanket stitch, or simply left as raw-edge applique for an intentionally casual design aesthetic.
How Wonder-Under Works
Wonder-Under has two adhesive layers separated by a paper backing. Trace the applique shape on the paper side. Fuse the product to the wrong side of the applique fabric using a dry iron. Cut out the shape. Peel the paper backing to expose the second adhesive layer. Position the shape on the quilt top and fuse in place. The applique shape is now permanently bonded to the quilt top, ready for edge finishing or raw-edge use.

Wonder-Under 805 vs. 725 Heavy-Duty
805 Wonder-Under is the standard-weight fusible web -- appropriate for standard quilting cotton and light-to-medium home dec fabric. 725 Heavy-Duty Wonder-Under is for heavier fabrics, denim, canvas, and applications where stronger bonding force is required. For standard quilting cotton applique, 805 is the correct and most commonly used choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Wonder-Under make applique fabric stiff?
Yes -- the fused double-adhesive layer adds some stiffness to the applique shape. This is appropriate for raw-edge and machine-finished applique. For softer, hand-applique-style results, a lighter fusible or non-fusible approach may be preferable.
Is Wonder-Under washable?
Yes -- the fused bond maintains integrity through normal machine washing. Heat (as in dryer) reinforces the bond; cold washing is also acceptable.
