Foam Structure, Fusible Convenience
Pellon FF78F1 Fusible Flex-Foam is a fundamentally different kind of stabilizer from fleece or interfacing products. Where fleece adds padding and interfacing adds stiffness, Flex-Foam adds genuine three-dimensional structural rigidity -- the kind that allows a fabric bag to stand upright on its own, hold its shape under load, and spring back to its original form after emptying. The fusible one-sided adhesive applies the foam directly to fabric with iron heat, creating a permanently stabilized panel ready to sew without basting or pinning.
What Makes Flex-Foam Different
The material is a tricot-knit outer layer bonded to a polyurethane foam core -- approximately 400 gsm (grams per square meter), which is meaningfully denser and more structured than typical fleece stabilizers. This foam construction provides compression resistance that fabric-based stabilizers cannot replicate: the foam returns to shape after compression rather than staying flat. For bags, this means panels that hold their form through daily use and repeated loading rather than gradually collapsing.
The one-sided fusible adhesive is on the outer tricot fabric face -- fuse to the wrong side of the bag's outer fabric and the foam core faces inward, providing structure throughout the bag's construction.

FF78F1 vs. Soft and Stable
Both are foam stabilizers for bag construction with similar structural results. Soft and Stable (58 inches wide, not fusible) is a sew-in foam. FF78F1 (20 inches wide, fusible) fuses with an iron for easier attachment but in narrower panels. For wide bag panels that need seamless coverage, Soft and Stable may be more convenient. For panels under 20 inches where fusible attachment is preferred, FF78F1 is the practical choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is FF78F1 washable?
Yes -- machine wash gentle, tumble dry low. The foam and tricot construction maintains integrity through normal washing.
Can it be sewn through on a domestic machine?
Yes -- the foam is designed for domestic and industrial sewing machines. A walking foot is recommended for even feeding through thick fused sandwiches.
Does the foam feel stiff or flexible?
Flex-Foam is designed to be firm but flexible -- it holds shape under load but flexes naturally when carried, providing structured feel without rigidity.
