708L - Large Ring Left Hand, Fine Point Straight (4in)

Hey everyone. Today you're going to learn how to build a simple two-tool workflow, so project prep goes faster and every cut lands where you meant it to.

Here's the problem, y'all. One pair of scissors doing every job slows you down. You cut long yardage with tiny scissors, and it takes forever. Then you trim threads with big shears, and the points feel clumsy. Two tools. Two jobs. That is the whole secret. Big cuts get the big tool. Detail cuts get the small one.

So here's what I use on my own table. These are the Famoré 708L scissors. They are 4 inches long, true left-handed, with a straight fine point and large rings. I reach for this pair because that fine point handles the small, precise work, and the large rings give my left hand a comfortable, easy grip. They were made for needle arts and crafts, and that detail work is exactly where they shine in this workflow.

What You Need

  • 708L - Large Ring Left Hand, Fine Point Straight (4in)
  • Your larger fabric shears — the partner tool for long, straight cuts
  • Your project fabric, pressed and ready
  • Your pattern pieces or a cutting list
  • A fabric marker or chalk
  • Pins or pattern weights
  • A clear, flat table and good light
  • A small tray or magnetic dish for loose cut pieces

The Steps

  1. Sort the cuts before you start. Look at your whole project first. Make two mental piles. Long cuts — yardage, borders, and big pattern pieces — go to your shears. Small cuts — notches, short seams, thread tails, and tight corners — go to the 708L. Two minutes of sorting saves twenty minutes of wrestling later.
  2. Do every big cut first. Start with your shears while the fabric is still in large, stable pieces. Cut your main panels and strips in one clean pass. Keep the fabric flat on the table. Lift as little as possible. When the big pieces are cut, stack them neatly to one side.
  3. Close the shears and set them down. This is the habit that makes the workflow work. One tool in your hand at a time. Shears closed, points away. Now pick up the 708L. A clean switch keeps your table safe and your head clear about which job you are on.
  4. Switch to detail mode. Now the 708L earns its keep. Trim your seam allowances even. Clip into corners so they turn cleanly. Snip notches exactly on your marks. That straight fine point gets right to the tip of a notch without cutting past it. Short, deliberate snips. Just like that.
  5. Work piece by piece, in the same order. Take one cut piece at a time. Finish all its detail cuts before you move on. Set the finished piece in your tray. This order — big, then small, piece by piece — means nothing gets missed and nothing gets cut twice.
  6. Finish with a thread pass. Before you sit down to sew, run the 708L around each piece one last time. Snip stray threads close, points angled away from the fabric. Two minutes here saves you stopping mid-seam later to hunt for a thread tail you cannot reach with big shears.

Tips From My Table

  • Left-handed folks, use your left hand here — that is the point. These are true left-handed scissors, so your thumb and fingers sit the way they should, and you can see your cutting line instead of guessing behind the blade.
  • If the detail work is fighting you, slow down. Take your time. It is not a race. Small scissors reward a steady pace, not a fast one.
  • It does not have to be perfect. A notch a hair off the mark still does its job. You're your own worst critic, folks. Keep moving and let the workflow carry you.
  • Prefer to trim threads at the machine instead of the table? Or do detail cuts before the big ones? Completely up to you. This order works for me, but your table, your rules.

A Quick Care Note

Wipe both blades with a soft, dry cloth when prep is done. Store the 708L closed, in a dry spot, points protected, separate from paper scissors. Keep these fine points for fabric, thread, and detail work only — paper and cardboard will dull a fine point faster than anything. Care for the pair, and the pair will care for your projects.

Alrighty, folks. Big tool for big cuts. Small tool for small cuts. If I can do this, y'all can do it. Thanks for sewing along with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
