Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between White Dove (2600) and White (2024) Aurifil?

White (2024) is a brighter, cooler pure white. White Dove (2600) is a softer, warmer off-white that blends more naturally with cream, natural, and warm-toned quilting fabrics. Many quilters find White Dove more versatile because it doesn’t stand out on natural cotton backgrounds the way bright white can.

Is 50wt cotton thread better for piecing or quilting?

50wt is excellent for both. The fine weight creates minimal seam bulk for piecing, and the cotton fiber blends into the weave of quilting cotton for a nearly invisible quilting line. It’s the most popular all-purpose weight among quilters.

Can I use Aurifil 50wt in a longarm machine?

Aurifil 50wt cotton can run in many longarm machines, but it produces more lint than polyester thread. Clean your machine more frequently, and check that your machine’s tension system handles 50wt cotton without issues. Many longarm quilters prefer polyester for production work.

What needle works best with 50wt Aurifil cotton?

An 80/12 needle is ideal for 50wt Aurifil on a domestic machine — a Microtex or quilting needle depending on whether you’re piecing or quilting. The fine thread runs smoothly through the small needle eye without fraying.

How does Aurifil compare to other 50wt cottons like Signature?

Aurifil is a 2-ply long-staple cotton prized for its exceptional smoothness, minimal lint, and wide color range. Signature 50wt is a 3-ply thread with slightly more body. Both are excellent; the choice comes down to availability and personal preference.
