Frequently Asked Questions
How does 28" x 58" compare to a standard 24" x 36" mat?
The 28" x 58" mat offers significantly more cutting surface — the extra length (58") accommodates long fabric strips and full-width backing pieces without repositioning. It’s ideal for a dedicated cutting table in a quilting studio.
Is a 28" width wide enough for folded quilting cotton?
Standard quilting cotton is 44"/45" wide. Folded in half (22"), it fits comfortably within 28". For single-layer full-width cuts, you would need to work in sections or use a wider mat.
Can I use both sides alternately to extend the mat’s life?
Yes — rotating between sides before either is fully worn keeps both surfaces in better condition and maximizes the mat’s total lifespan. Flip regularly rather than waiting until one side is fully grooved.
How do I prevent this large mat from warping?
Store flat at all times — never roll or fold. Keep away from heat sources (irons, direct sunlight, hot cars). A dedicated cutting table where the mat stays flat permanently is ideal for a mat this size.
Is Creative Grids a reliable brand for cutting mats?
Yes — Creative Grids is a well-respected quilting tools brand known for high-quality rulers, templates, and cutting mats. Their self-healing mats are known for consistent surface quality and durability.
