Hobbs Poly 16oz 96in Wide Batting Roll

The Hobbs Poly 16oz 96" Wide Batting Roll is a mid-weight 100% polyester batting providing moderate loft and excellent drape for longarm quilt production. At 16oz weight and 96" wide, this is a versatile production polyester that sits between the lighter standard polyester and the high-loft 20oz format — the ideal choice for customer quilts where a firmer, more defined quilting appearance is preferred over flat low-loft polyester.

Top 10 Questions About Hobbs Poly 16oz 96in Wide Roll

What does 16oz polyester batting mean?

16oz refers to the weight per square yard of the batting — heavier than standard 6oz–8oz polyester and lighter than high-loft 20oz. Heavier polyester batting has more fiber fill, producing more loft and a plumper finished quilt than lighter polyester.

Is 16oz polyester appropriate for machine quilting?

Yes — 16oz polyester works well for longarm and domestic machine quilting. The additional loft compared to lighter polyester creates more visible quilting texture and a plumper finished quilt.

How does 16oz compare to standard low-loft polyester?

Standard production polyester is typically 6oz–8oz with minimal loft. 16oz provides noticeably more body and loft, resulting in a quilt that is visibly plumper and softer than quilts made with lower-weight polyester.

Is 16oz polyester appropriate for bed quilts?

Yes — 16oz polyester provides good warmth and loft for bed quilts. Polyester is non-allergenic, consistent in loft through washing, and doesn’t require pre-washing.

Does 16oz polyester shrink after washing?

No — polyester batting does not shrink. The finished quilt maintains consistent size through repeated laundering, which is an advantage over cotton batting for customers who want consistent sizing.

What stitch distance is appropriate?

Check current Hobbs recommendations for Poly 16oz. Polyester batting generally allows greater stitch distance than cotton, but always follow manufacturer guidance.

Is the 96" width appropriate for queen quilts?

96" accommodates queen quilts with standard loading overlap. For king quilts requiring more than 96" width, a 120" batting would be needed.

Is 16oz polyester a good upsell over standard thin polyester?

Yes — 16oz provides a noticeably fuller, higher-quality finished quilt compared to thin standard polyester. It is an easy upsell for customers who want a plumper quilt without the cost of cotton or wool batting.

How does 16oz compare to Hobbs Poly 20oz?

20oz is even higher loft and plumper; 16oz provides good loft with slightly less extreme bulk. Studios offering both can match the right weight to each customer’s preference for final quilt thickness.

Is roll format economical for production?

Yes — roll format provides better per-yard economy than packaged batting and allows exact yardage cutting for each quilt without waste.
