How does Tuscany cotton compare to standard Hobbs Heirloom cotton?

Both are quality cotton battings, but Tuscany uses premium long-staple cotton with a more refined construction process. The result is a softer, less scratchy batting with reduced bearding and a more consistent surface. Tuscany is the choice for quilts where the absolute best cotton batting performance is desired.

Why choose unbleached over bleached Tuscany?

Unbleached is the natural cotton color — a warm tan/cream tone. It’s appropriate for most quilt fabric tones and avoids the chemical processing of bleaching. For white or very light fabrics where batting may show through, the bleached version is preferable.

What stitch spacing is recommended?

Hobbs recommends quilting within 6" for Tuscany cotton batting — slightly tighter than their standard cotton to fully secure the premium fiber construction.

Does Tuscany cotton shrink?

Yes — approximately 3–5% on first washing. Pre-wash if a perfectly flat finish is required.

Is Tuscany cotton appropriate for hand quilting?

Yes — Tuscany’s premium long-staple cotton allows needles to pass through smoothly and consistently, making it excellent for hand quilting on special projects.
