Description
Hobbs Tuscany Silk is a blend of 90% very fine imported silk filaments and 10% fine polyester. It is supple and soft, Hobbs says it drapes like no other batting, and silk breathes, so it gives real warmth with very little weight. It is carded and resin-bonded to help retard bearding and fiber migration, and unlike some silk battings it does not need to be handled with gloves or encased in cheesecloth.
This king package measures 120" x 120", sized for king bed quilts in one piece, with no batting seam to hide. Its drape also makes it a good choice for quilted garments and airy, lightweight coverlets. It quilts well by hand or machine.
Expect 3-5% shrinkage. The manufacturer listing gives a quilting distance of 3.5" in one place and 4" in another, so we suggest planning on 3.5" or closer. Wash finished pieces by hand, or by machine on a delicate cycle in cool water with no heavy agitation or spin; go easy with front loaders. Start drying in a cool dryer for 5-10 minutes, then air dry. Make a sample first.

Compare and choose
- Silk vs wool batting: which drapes and breathes better?
- Silk is the drapiest and lightest for its warmth, so it suits coverlets, art quilts and garments. Wool has more loft and spring, which makes quilting designs pop and lets fold lines relax. For a stocked wool option, Hobbs Heirloom Wool comes in queen and king packages. Hobbs Heirloom Wool packages
- Do I need gloves or cheesecloth to work with Tuscany Silk?
- No. Because it is carded and resin-bonded, Tuscany Silk can be handled and layered like any other batting. It quilts well by hand or machine.
- How do I wash a quilt or garment made with silk batting?
- Hand wash, or machine wash on a delicate cycle in cool water with no heavy agitation or spinning. Put it in a cool dryer for 5-10 minutes to start, then air dry. Expect 3-5% shrinkage.
- Is the king 120" x 120" batt big enough for my quilt?
- Plan on batting at least 2" larger than your top on every side, and about 4" on every side if it is going on a longarm frame. This 120" x 120" batt covers finished tops up to about 116" x 116" for domestic quilting, or about 112" x 112" on a longarm.
- Is there a lower-cost batting with a similar soft drape?
- Bamboo blends are the closest: Quilters Dream Bamboo blends bamboo, Tussah silk, Tencel and cotton for a silky drape, and can be quilted up to 8" apart. Quilters Dream Bamboo packages
