Description

Hobbs Heirloom 100% Wool in a pre-cut package, queen 90" x 108" or king 120" x 120". This is the batting our customers pick when they want quilting to show: the 1/4" to 3/8" loft puts feathers and fills into relief, and the wool springs back after folding instead of creasing. It is also one of the lightest warm battings we sell, so a wool quilt is cozy without being heavy.

The wool is superwashed, a process that smooths the scales on the fiber so it feels soft against the skin and is far less prone to shrinking than untreated wool. It breathes naturally, which makes it comfortable in hot and humid climates as well as cold ones. It needles beautifully by hand and runs clean on a longarm. The batting is bonded to resist bearding and migration. Packages ship anywhere, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Compare and choose

Heirloom Wool vs Tuscany Wool: what is the difference?
Both are 100% superwashed wool from Hobbs. Heirloom Wool is the lighter, lower-loft of the two, bonded for stability and quilted within 4". Tuscany Wool is Hobbs' premium line with a slightly fuller loft and a more luxurious hand, and it costs more. For everyday custom quilting and bed quilts, Heirloom Wool is the sensible choice; for a show quilt where drape and definition matter most, step up to Tuscany. Hobbs Tuscany Wool package
Wool vs 80/20: why pay more for wool?
Loft, resilience and warmth-to-weight. Heirloom 80/20 is about 1/8" thick and gives a flat, traditional look; wool is two to three times loftier, so quilting designs stand out, and it recovers from folding without permanent creases. Wool is also warmer for its weight and breathes better. If you want a flat quilt or are tying rather than quilting, stay with 80/20. Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom package
Is Hobbs wool batting washable?
Yes. The wool is superwashed, which smooths the fiber scales so it resists felting and shrinks far less than untreated wool. Do not pre-wash the batting. Wash the finished quilt on a gentle cycle in cool water and air dry or tumble on low; expect 3-5% shrinkage the first time.
Does wool batting beard?
Hobbs bonds this batting specifically to resist bearding and migration, and in our experience it runs clean on a longarm. Bearding is more likely with loosely woven or very light-colored fabric, so test a corner if your top is a loose weave or pure white.
Hobbs Heirloom Wool vs Quilters Dream Wool: which should I buy?
They are close. Both are washable 100% wool with a similar mid loft and 4" stitch spacing. Dream Wool is scoured and needle-punched rather than bonded, and many hand quilters find it slightly softer; Hobbs Heirloom Wool is bonded, a little more stable on the frame, and is the one most of our longarm customers stock. Either is a good choice for custom quilting. Quilters Dream Wool package
Can I use wool for a hot pad or bowl cozy?
No. Only 100% cotton batting with no scrim or polyester, or Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, is safe in the microwave. Wool, polyester, bamboo and fusible battings are not.
Queen or king package?
Add at least 4" to every side of your finished top for longarm loading. Tops up to about 84" x 100" fit the queen 90" x 108" package; wider tops, including most king quilts, need the king 120" x 120" package. For lengths in between, the Heirloom Wool roll is 108" wide.
