Crib Quilts in Clean White: Choosing Low-Loft Cotton Batting for Baby and Toddler Quilts

A crib quilt is often a baby's first quilt — pieced in soft whites, pale pastels, and gentle prints, and washed again and again. The batting inside that quilt matters. A natural, unbleached batting can cast a warm, creamy shadow through light fabrics and dull the colors on top. Pellon® White Cotton Batting With Scrim in the 45" x 60" Crib Size Package is made from bleached cotton, so it stays bright and clean-looking beneath white and light-colored quilting projects.

What This Batting Is

This is a needle-punched batting made from 93% bleached cotton with a 7% polypropylene scrim. The scrim is a soft stabilizing layer that runs through the batting during the needle-punching process. According to Pellon, it lends strength and stability without bunching or bearding — bearding being the unwanted migration of batting fibers through the quilt top.

At 1/16 of an inch, this is a low-loft batting. Your finished crib quilt will lie relatively flat and drape softly rather than puffing up with high loft. That flat, traditional finish puts the focus on your piecing and quilting stitches, and it makes the quilt easy to fold, layer, and wash. The 45" x 60" package is sized as a crib size, giving you a single ready-to-use piece for a crib quilt top without having to join batting scraps together.

What It's Best For

  • Crib quilts with white, pastel, or other light-colored tops where show-through would dull the design
  • Baby and toddler quilts where you want a soft drape and a flat, traditional finish
  • Small quilts quilted by hand or by machine, thanks to the generous maximum stitch distance
  • Everyday quilts that will be washed regularly — the scrim helps the batting hold together through handling and laundering

How to Use It

Start by taking the batting out of the package and laying it flat to relax before you build your quilt sandwich. Letting folds ease out first helps the layers sit smoothly when you baste. Lay your backing wrong side up, center the batting over it, then add your quilt top right side up. Because the scrim adds stability, the batting is less likely to stretch or shift as you pin, spray-baste, or hand-baste the layers together.

The key number to remember is the recommended maximum stitch distance: 10" apart. Your quilting lines — whether straight-line machine quilting, free-motion designs, or hand quilting — should be spaced so that no unquilted area is wider than that guidance. Ten inches is a wide allowance for a small crib quilt, so both simple, widely spaced designs and denser quilting fit comfortably within it. Keep the spacing reasonably even across the quilt so the batting stays supported everywhere.

Shrinkage and Prewashing

Expect shrinkage of 3–5%. After the first wash, that slight contraction can give a finished quilt a softly crinkled, well-loved texture that many quilters prize. If you prefer the flattest possible finish, consider that shrinkage when you plan your quilting and binding, and wash the finished quilt before gifting so its final texture is already set. If you love the crinkled look, simply quilt, bind, and wash once — and let the batting do the rest.

Care and Tips

This batting is washable by hand or machine and is also dry cleanable, so you can care for the finished quilt in the way that suits the fabrics on the outside. For a quilt that will be washed often, secure basting and even quilting within the 10" maximum distance are your best insurance against shifting. Store any leftover batting flat or rolled rather than tightly folded, and keep it clean and dry until your next small project — offcuts are handy for mug rugs, small wall hangings, and other little makes, as long as the pieces are large enough to be quilted within the recommended distance.

Choose this crib size when the project is small, the fabrics are light, and you want the dependable feel of cotton with the added stability of a scrim — all in a bright white that lets your pale fabrics look their best.
