Jelly Roll Rugs Without the Cutting: Pre-Cut 2.5-Inch Batting Strips Explained
Making a jelly roll rug, a rope bowl, or a coiled basket usually starts with a tedious step: cutting batting into long, even 2.5-inch strips and joining them end to end. Pellon® Natural Cotton Batting With Scrim in the Jelly Roll Size Package removes that step entirely. It arrives as one continuous 2.5-inch strip, rolled 50 yards long, so you can go straight to wrapping, coiling, and sewing.
What This Batting Is
This is Pellon's natural cotton batting, pre-cut into strip form. The fiber content is 93% natural cotton with a 7% polypropylene scrim. The batting is needle-punched, and that soft scrim lends strength and stability without bunching or bearding — bearding being the unwanted migration of batting fibers through fabric. In a strip that will be wrapped, folded, coiled, and sewn through many times, that built-in strength matters: the strip needs to hold together and keep its width instead of stretching out of shape as you work.
At 1/16 of an inch, the loft is low. The strip adds soft padding and body without bulk, which is exactly what flat rugs, bowls, and straps need. A thicker batting would fight you at every curve and make seams hard to sew through; this low loft keeps the strip flexible and easy to guide under the presser foot.
What It's Best For
- Jelly roll rugs: The 50-yard roll is the full-rug size — enough for the classic oval jelly roll rug in one purchase, without piecing multiple rolls together.
- Rope bowls and coiled baskets: The strip's tensile strength from the scrim helps it hold up as you wrap, coil, and stitch.
- Bag straps: Low-loft padding that adds comfort and body without making a strap stiff or bulky.
- Quilt-as-you-go strips: A ready-made batting strip sized for strip-based construction.
How to Use It
For a jelly roll rug or coiled project, the basic construction is the same: wrap or fold your fabric strip around the batting strip, then join the wrapped strips edge to edge with a wide zigzag stitch as you coil or lay them side by side. Work on a flat surface, keep the strips lying smoothly without twisting, and sew slowly around curves so each new row sits flat against the last. Because the batting is already cut to a consistent 2.5-inch width, your rows come out even — no wavy edges from hand-cut strips that drifted narrower or wider along their length.
The recommended maximum stitch distance for this batting is 10 inches apart, which is generous for strip projects: the dense zigzag joining in a rug, bowl, or basket falls far inside that limit, so the batting stays well supported throughout the finished piece.
Shrinkage and Care
Expect shrinkage of 3–5%, in line with Pellon's other natural cotton battings. On a finished rug or bowl, a first wash may soften and settle the piece slightly; plan for that small change rather than expecting the dimensions to stay exactly as sewn. The batting is washable by hand or machine and is dry cleanable, so finished projects can be cared for according to the fabrics you wrapped around it.
Tips for a Better Finish
Unroll only what you need as you work, and keep the rest of the roll tidy so the strip does not twist or tangle on its way to the machine. Check that the strip stays centered inside your fabric wrap as you sew — even coverage keeps the finished rug lying flat instead of cupping. Store leftover strip rolled rather than folded, clean and dry, ready for a matching bowl or a set of coasters.
If you love the look of jelly roll rugs and coiled baskets but not the prep work, this pre-cut roll is the shortcut: real cotton batting with scrim, in exactly the strip size those projects call for.
