Good morning, quilters! Corey here.
Ever notice how some quilts instantly feel bright, fresh, and seasonal?
It's usually not the pattern.
It's the fabric selection.
Start with a feeling, not a pattern
Most quilters start with a pattern. Experienced quilters often start with a feeling.
Before choosing fabrics, ask yourself: how do you want this quilt to feel?
Bright and cheerful? Fresh and natural? Soft and inviting?
The answer guides every fabric choice that follows—and it's why two quilts made from the exact same pattern can feel like they belong to entirely different seasons.

The summer quilt formula
Light backgrounds. Creams, whites, and soft neutrals do for a quilt what open windows do for a room—everything instantly feels airier. Swap a dark background for a light one and even a traditional block reads as summery.
Nature-inspired prints. Florals, botanicals, leaves, and garden motifs bring the season straight into the blocks. Small-scale prints keep it fresh; large-scale florals make it a statement.
Cheerful pops of color. Sunny yellows, warm corals, aqua, and leafy greens against those light backgrounds are what make a summer quilt feel alive. A little goes a long way—pops, not floods.
Fabrics that feel light. Crisp quilting cottons with a soft hand drape beautifully over a porch chair or picnic blanket. Save the flannel and heavy layers for the fall stash.

Try a summer fabric pull
Pull from your stash (or your favorite quilt shop) using the checklist: a few light neutrals for background, two or three botanical or floral prints, one or two cheerful accent colors, and a binding fabric that ties it together. Lay them out side by side and squint—if the stack feels like sunshine, you've got it.
Something for you
We've curated a Summer Fabric Collection with prints chosen to work beautifully together—whether you're planning a full quilt, a table runner, or simply building your stash. Our summer quilting fabrics are full of the light backgrounds, botanicals, and cheerful brights that make the formula work.

Happy Quilting!
