Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 120 Wide Batting Roll - By The Yard

King-Size Width Without Buying the Whole Roll

Hey everyone. Corey here. Sometimes you need batting that is wide — really wide — but you only need a few yards of it. That is exactly what this listing is for. It is the Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 batting you already know, on the big 120-inch roll, cut to order. You tell us how many yards, we cut it off the roll, and it heads your way. One unit in the cart is one yard of 120-inch-wide batting. Order four units, and you get one continuous four-yard cut. No wrestling a whole roll into the closet, and no piecing narrow batting together for a king quilt. If you want the full roll instead, we carry it. We also have by-the-yard cuts of the Hobbs Heirloom Black and Bleached 108-inch battings, and studios that go through cases of packages can read our Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 batting case guide.

Top 10 Uses for Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Batting By the Yard

  1. King Quilts Without Seams -- At 120 inches wide, one cut backs a king top with width to spare. No batting seams down the middle, ever.
  2. Longarm Quilts -- Load a continuous cut onto the frame and quilt edge to edge without stopping to join pieces.
  3. Oversized Throws -- Those generous couch throws that outgrow a packaged throw size fit easily on this width.
  4. Buying Exactly What the Pattern Needs -- Project calls for three yards? Buy three yards. The leftovers math is suddenly very friendly.
  5. Hand Quilting -- Hobbs rates this batting excellent for hand quilting. Test a scrap with your fabric first, then hoop up and go.
  6. Machine Quilting, Close or Open -- Stitch lines close together for a flat, low-loft finish, or space them up to 4 inches apart for a touch more puff.
  7. Dark and Medium Quilts -- This is where the natural cotton blend shines. Hobbs rates it excellent with dark fabrics.
  8. Bed Quilts That Get Washed Often -- The 80/20 blend and light resin bonding hold up to real life, wash after wash.
  9. Two Queen Quilts From One Cut -- A longer yardage cut covers back-to-back projects without a second order.
  10. Studio and Guild Stock -- Keep a few yards on hand and you are ready the day a top is finished, not a week later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order the length I need?

Simple, y'all. The quantity is the yardage. Add 1 for one yard, 4 for four yards, and so on. Your batting comes as one continuous cut off the 120-inch roll, folded for shipping. Order a little extra if you like plenty of overhang on the frame — completely up to you.

What is Heirloom 80/20 made of?

It is 80 percent natural cotton and 20 percent fine polyester. Hobbs needle punches it and adds a light resin bonding, which gives it exceptional strength and durability for a batting that still drapes like cotton. The loft is about 1/8 inch plus, so it quilts up flat and traditional.

How close do my quilting stitches need to be?

Keep stitching lines every 4 inches or closer. Closer quilting gives you that flat, low-loft look. Spacing the lines out toward that 4-inch max yields a slightly higher loft. Either way is fine, folks. Your quilt, your call.

Will it shrink?

Expect about 3 to 5 percent shrinkage, which is part of that soft, crinkled, loved-in look after the first wash. Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing this batting, and neither do we. Just quilt it and let it do its thing.

Can I use it with white and pastel fabrics?

You can, but test first. The unbleached cotton in the blend can slightly darken white and light pastel fabrics. With medium and dark fabrics, it is excellent, no worries at all. For a bright white quilt, look at the bleached Heirloom option instead.
