Hey everyone. Today you're going to learn how to cut freezer-paper templates and fusible web cleanly, without gumming up your scissor blades.
Here's the problem, y'all. Freezer paper and fusible web are appliqué gold. You draw your shape. You iron it on. You cut it out. Easy, right? Then you look at your blades. Sticky. Draggy. Full of glue. Every cut after that pulls and chews. The paper was never the trouble. The warm, exposed glue was.
Here's what I use for this job. These are the Famoré 712A Appliqué Scissors, with no duckbill. They are 5 1/2 inches long. The flat blades let me trim right along a line, close and precise. That is exactly what template cutting asks for. I keep this pair at my appliqué station, and they cut my templates week after week. If I can do this, y'all can do it.
What You Need
- 712A - Applique Scissors, With no Duckbill (5.5in.)
- Freezer paper, dull side up for drawing
- Paper-backed fusible web
- Your appliqué fabric
- A pencil or fine marker
- An iron and pressing surface
- A soft, dry cloth for wiping the blades
- A scrap bin for paper trimmings
The Steps
- Draw on the dull side. Freezer paper has a shiny side and a dull side. Draw your template on the dull side. Remember, the shape flips when you iron it on. Letters and numbers need to be drawn in reverse. Take your time here. A clean drawing makes a clean cut.
- Press, then let it cool fully. Iron the shiny side to the wrong side of your fabric. Use a dry iron and press about 8 to 10 seconds per spot. Then walk away. Let that paper sit a full 60 seconds. Warm glue is sticky glue. Cool glue behaves. This one pause saves your blades more than anything else in this list.
- Cut paper side up. Put the paper side on top as you cut. Your blades meet paper first, not exposed web. Slide the flat blade right along your drawn line. Use long, smooth cuts where the shape allows it. On a gentle curve, turn the fabric, not the scissors. Just like that, the edge stays smooth instead of choppy.
- For fusible web, cut before you peel. Draw your shape on the paper backing of the fusible web. Fuse it to your fabric per the web's own directions. Then let it cool completely, at least 60 seconds. Cut the shape out with the paper backing still on. The backing is your shield. It keeps the glue layer off your blades while you cut.
- Wipe between every shape. After each template, open the scissors and wipe both blades with your soft, dry cloth. It takes about 5 seconds. Check the inner blade faces, right near the pivot. That is where residue hides. Five seconds now beats twenty minutes of scrubbing later.
- Peel last, not first. Only peel the freezer paper or backing paper away after the shape is fully cut. Peeling early leaves bare glue facing your next cut. Peel last, and the glue only ever touches fabric, right where it belongs.
Tips From My Table
- Cut your plain paper practice shapes first. New to a shape? Cut it once in plain freezer paper with no fusible at all. Zero glue. Zero risk. Then do the real one with confidence.
- Slow down at tight corners. Small inside corners want short, tiny snips, about 1/8 inch at a time. Rush a corner and you will cut past your line. Slow and small wins here, folks.
- It doesn't have to be perfect. A template edge that wobbles a hair still stitches down just fine under your appliqué stitch. You're your own worst critic. Take your time. It's not a race.
- I learned this one the honest way. I once cut fusible shapes while they were still warm from the iron. Every blade pass dragged worse than the last. By shape number 4, I was sawing, not cutting. Let it cool. Wipe the blades. That pair still cuts clean today because I changed the habit, not the scissors. Completely up to you, but cool and wiped is my way.
A Quick Care Note
When you're done, wipe both blades one last time with a soft, dry cloth, inside faces included. Close the scissors before you put them away. Store them flat, in a case or a dedicated spot, so those flat blades stay protected and ready for the next template.
Alrighty, folks. Draw dull side up. Let the glue cool. Cut paper side up. Wipe between shapes. Thanks for sewing along with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
