Pellon 2301S vs 542S Stick-N-Washaway: which printable wash-away do I want?

Both are letter-size, printable and dissolve in water. 2301S is plain paper with no adhesive: you pin, baste or hoop it, and a package holds 12 sheets. 542S has a pressure-sensitive sticky back that holds the sheet to the fabric without pins, which is handy for hand-embroidery transfers and small pieces that are awkward to hoop, and comes 5 sheets to a package. Pick 2301S for foundation piecing and hooped work; pick 542S when you want the sheet to stay put on its own.

Is 2301S better than regular foundation paper for paper piecing?

It removes the worst part of the job. Ordinary foundation paper or tracing paper has to be torn out of every seam, which can stress small points. With 2301S you print the block, stitch it, trim it, and soak the finished block so the paper dissolves. If you prefer tear-away paper, Pellon 111 Tracing Paper is the lower-cost choice.

How do I remove Print-Stitch-Dissolve after stitching?

Tear away any large excess, then soak or rinse the piece in water until the remaining paper dissolves. Let the block dry flat before pressing. Any fiber left in dense seams rinses out in the first wash of the finished project.

Can I use 2301S as an embroidery stabilizer?

Yes, as a lightweight wash-away foundation. Print the design or a placement guide on it, stitch, and rinse. For dense machine embroidery on stable fabric, most of our customers still put a tear-away or cut-away underneath and use the printed sheet on top as the guide. Pellon 2301S Print-Stitch-Dissolve is a lightweight wood-cellulose paper that runs through a home printer, stitches like foundation paper, and then dissolves in water instead of being picked out of the seams. Each package holds twelve 8.5" x 11" sheets. It is for foundation paper piecers who are tired of tweezing paper out of tiny points, and for embroiderers who want to print a design or stitch guide directly onto a stabilizer and rinse it away afterward.

This is a sew-in product with no adhesive. It is not pressure sensitive and does not have a sticky back, so it is pinned, basted or hooped like any other foundation. If you want a printable wash-away sheet that sticks to the fabric, use Pellon 542S Stick-N-Washaway instead. Because the paper dissolves, use it only on projects that can be rinsed when the stitching is done.
