Description
Soft and Stable by ByAnnie is the foam stabilizer bag makers use in place of batting when a project needs to hold its shape: purses, totes, bins, placemats and quilted accessories. It is polyester foam with fabric on both sides, about .175" thick, so it gives a bag lasting body and a padded, professional finish while staying lightweight.
It is sew-in, not fusible. Most makers baste it to the wrong side of the exterior fabric and quilt through both layers, which locks the foam in and adds texture. The finished project is washer and dryer safe. The 36" x 58" piece is enough for a large tote with pieces left for pouches, or a full set of placemats and a table runner. For a single small project, the 18" x 58" piece costs less; for production bag making, the black also comes 72" x 58".
White is the color to use under light and bright fabrics. Under dark fabrics, black Soft and Stable keeps the edges from showing at the seams.

Compare and choose
- Soft and Stable vs In-R-Form: which foam should I use?
- Both are polyester foam stabilizers for bags. Soft and Stable is sew-in only, with fabric on both sides, and is quilted to your exterior fabric. Bosal In-R-Form comes sew-in, single-sided fusible and double-sided fusible (In-R-Form Plus), so it suits patterns that tell you to fuse the foam instead of quilting it. If your pattern names one, use that one; otherwise choose by whether you would rather quilt or fuse. In-R-Form sew-in foam 36" x 58"
- Soft and Stable vs Pellon Flex-Foam: what is the difference?
- Pellon FF77 Flex-Foam is also a sew-in foam stabilizer, sold on a 20" x 10 yard bolt, so it suits makers who cut a lot of panels. Soft and Stable comes in fixed pieces and is the foam many bag patterns are written around. Both are quilted or basted in and both give a padded, stand-up finish. Pellon FF77 Sew-In Flex-Foam bolt
- Is Soft and Stable fusible? How do I attach it?
- No, it is sew-in. Baste it to the wrong side of the exterior fabric about 1/8" from the edge, then quilt through both layers in straight lines or a grid. Quilting keeps the foam from shifting and is what gives the bag its finished look. Trim foam out of the seam allowances to cut bulk at the seams.
- White or black: which should I buy?
- Use white under light, bright or white fabrics. Use black under dark or saturated fabrics, so foam edges at seams and corners do not show through. Black Soft and Stable 36" x 58"
- Can I wash a bag made with Soft and Stable?
- Yes. Soft and Stable is washer and dryer safe, so a finished bag or placemat can be laundered according to the outer fabric's care needs.
- Can I use it in a microwave bowl cozy?
- No. Foam stabilizer is polyester, and polyester is not microwave safe, so do not use it in bowl cozies or anything that goes in the microwave. It is fine for hot pads and trivets that stay on the counter; for microwave projects use 100% cotton batting and cotton thread.
