Corey from Linda's Electric Quilters with a roll of Quilters Dream Bamboo batting: It's a Bamboo Kind of Day

Hi Bestie,

Welcome to Corey's Batting Corner. Tips, education, inspiration.

Today, it's a bamboo kind of day.

I want to show you why Quilters Dream Bamboo batting is a favorite for quilters who love softness, breathability and beautiful draping quilts.

Corey's Batting Corner infographic: why Quilters Dream Bamboo batting, its four-fiber blend of bamboo, Tussah silk, Tencel and cotton, Corey's top 4 uses for summer quilts, baby quilts, bed and throw quilts and hand or longarm quilting, plus Corey's tips on loft, prewashing, quilting distance, care and shrinkage

Why Dream Bamboo?

It's an exceptionally soft, silky-draping blend of bamboo, Tussah silk, Tencel and cotton.

Breathable, lightweight comfort with beautiful movement.

  • Naturally breathable. Air moves through it, so the quilt never feels stuffy.
  • Soft and silky drape. The quilt falls and folds instead of standing stiff.
  • Lightweight comfort. Warmth without the weight.
  • A beautiful natural feel. Plant fibers and silk, with a soft cream color.

If you want to go deeper on what each fiber contributes, my bamboo batting guide walks through it, and the Dream Bamboo package guide covers every size.

Why the blend matters

Here's the part most people never hear.

Bamboo fiber on its own is wonderfully soft, but it's a short fiber. Short fibers alone can shift and thin out over time.

So Quilters Dream blends it with longer fibers. Tussah silk adds strength and that silky hand. Tencel adds resilience. Cotton adds the breathability and stability you already trust.

Then the whole blend is carded, crosslapped and finely needle-punched. That's what makes a batting this soft also stable enough to quilt up to 8 inches apart.

Soft and stable usually pull in opposite directions. The blend is how Dream Bamboo gets both.

Corey's Tip

  • Select loft. Dream Bamboo comes in Select loft, the mid-weight that suits most projects. Match the loft to the job, not the other way around.
  • No prewashing needed. Ready to quilt right out of the package.
  • Quilt up to 8 inches apart. Stays stable and looks great.
  • Cool wash and cool dry. Helps maintain softness and loft.
  • Allow for about 3% shrinkage. A little goes a long way. That gentle shrink is what gives a quilt its soft, crinkled finish. If you've ever had a quilt shrink unevenly, here's why that happens.

Remember

A softer quilt starts inside.

Fabric gets all the attention, but the batting decides how the quilt feels, drapes and ages. When something looks off on the top, the cause is often underneath.

Not sure Dream Bamboo is the right pick? My batting selection guide compares the options, and I put Dream Bamboo head to head with Hobbs Tuscany Cotton/Wool for the quilters who asked.

Happy Quilting! From Corey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Quilters Dream Bamboo batting made of?

Dream Bamboo is a blend of bamboo, Tussah silk, Tencel and natural cotton. The fibers are carded, crosslapped and needle-punched into a soft cream batting with a silky drape. Full details are in the Dream Bamboo package guide.

Is bamboo batting good for summer quilts?

Yes. Bamboo batting is naturally breathable and lightweight, so it keeps a quilt cool and comfortable in warm weather. It's one of my top picks for summer quilts and baby quilts. See the bamboo batting guide for who it suits best.

How far apart can you quilt Dream Bamboo batting?

You can quilt as closely as you like or up to 8 inches apart. It works for hand quilting, domestic machine quilting and longarm quilting. If your stitching isn't showing the way you want, read Your Batting Is Flattening Your Quilting.

Does Quilters Dream Bamboo batting need to be prewashed, and how much does it shrink?

No prewashing is needed. Expect about 3% shrinkage after the first wash, which gives the quilt a soft, gently crinkled look. Wash cool and dry cool to keep the softness and loft. For an even result, see why quilts shrink unevenly.

Is bamboo batting better than cotton batting?

Not better, just different. Bamboo blends are softer, lighter and drape more than 100% cotton, while cotton is a little firmer and more traditional. My batting selection guide and the Dream Bamboo vs Hobbs Tuscany comparison will help you choose.
